Well, there was the whole movie about football brain trauma that almost won an Oscar last year.

Yeah, we already discussed that. It was a box office bomb because nobody cares.

Even if they do, their need for entertainment trumps their concern for millionaires playing a game.

Didn't see the movie, although I agree no one cares about millionaires hurting themselves.

THEY DO care about millionaires bitching about the system that made them rich, though.

Very true!

I think a lot of it comes down to shared experiences, though. I would have never thought the NFL would have been in trouble, even though I was expecting the high school participation to drop (helicopter parents and all). But my dad made me take another look. He's 78 years old. Huge football fan all his life. Played in high school. Wanted me to play (alas, I was way to skinny for that), and to this day still listens to the high school game on the radio every Friday night. I realize now that's as much a community thing for him as a football thing.

When all the NFL kneeling came up, he said he didn't much care for watching NFL football anyway. "All those guys prancing around when they make a touchdown or a tackle like they cured cancer rather than doing the job they get paid millions to do. I'd rather watch college ball."

So he wasn't a regular NFL watcher anymore at that point already.

Added to that, I walked into his house a couple of years ago and he's watching soccer. I ask why in the hell he's watching soccer? "Well, I watch Austin and Mandy (grandkids) when I'm in Nashville. I like to know what's going on when I watch them. It's not that bad."

WTF? That's when I started looking at the shared experiences. So as high school programs shrink and then college programs such that there isn't that coming together of community for the games, I think that lack of community and shared experience will be very bad for the future of the League.

That's why the kneeling is important. Not in and of itself, but as a part of that whole and that communal experience. I just see a lot of things coming together that are not going to be helpful for the future of the NFL. I don't think it's going to be one thing to point to to say "That killed it!" But I think it will be weakened to the point where one thing (such as the brain trauma lawsuits or something similar) will get all the blame when it becomes the final nail.

I think soccer can survive without heading the ball. It's already frowned upon (if not banned) with the school leagues. I don't see how football can survive without tackling.

I audibly laughed at that scene. It's so spot on for people who aren't sports fans.

I have a 22 point lead going into tonight, and the Chiefs defense. That will immediately make my lead 32, but that can shrink based on Washington's scoring.

My opponent has Kareem Hunt whose lowest point total this year has been 25...

My gut says you are safe as far as your D goes... but... Hmmm. Redskins' D just isn't all that. At least, I'm unconvinced so far.

Josh Doctson needs to learn how to catch a damned ball, JFC. In his hands, just has to get BOTH hands around it and secure it, lets the ground force it out instead. Fuck.

Watching my team turns me into Malcolm.

Don't say that!

I won. The Skins held Hunt in check and gave gamblers a BAD beat when they fumbled that final kickoff to allow KC to cover the 6 1/2 point spread.

Ugh, that was terrible. So many little things my team does wrong. Ugh.
