It was a little underwhelming and the goofiness of the Dwarfs is a bit concerning but the ending with Gollum saved it. Regardless of how well he performs I think Andy Serkis will get an oscar nomination for the total body of work.
The Hobbit: One rumor that is confirmed: Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit will indeed now be three films instead of two, with the director writing on his Facebook page, "We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance." The first installment, An Unexpected Journey, is scheduled for release on Dec. 14, 2012.
Expectations for this thing are going to be huge. Not saying it can't deliver, but even Chris Nolan and Batman couldn't make me give enough of a fuck for three movies.
Is it against the law to capitalize on someone else's marketing? If so, should it be if you're not offering the same product aside from a similar title?
That being said, I've got to think it's wildly unethical.

If those fuckers had any inspiration, originality, or creativity of their own, I'd be on their side. They've proven time and time again they're just cinematic vultures hoping to pick the carrion of more successful and legit movies. Fuck them.

Much as I hate those guys, I'm pretty sure that prior restraint ruling was wildly unconstitutional. They can't stop them from releasing the film like that according to legal precedent in the US (specifically Near v. Minnesota set the line at issues of national security, and it hasn't been moved much since then). They can sue the shit out of them after it's been released, though.

My summary: It is a Hobbit movie made by Peter Jackson, what do you expect. He hit just about every scene from the book.... almost correctly. A bunch of stuff was added from the appendices of LOTR which I liked, but an entirely new subplot was added with the group being hunted that I did not like.
Loved the look of Erebor.
My detailed account: In the spoiler thread.

Having had a few minutes to digest it, I think that it is obvious that they stretched a 3 hour movie into 2 movies, then decided they had so much extra footage that they could turn it into 3 movies.
Instead of Extended Editions this go around, I bet there would be a market for "Condensed Editions" that cut about an hour of scenic panoramas of the New Zealand landscape in which you can also see 14 little people walking in a row. We've already got the "Extended Edition" in the theater.
That being said, I am going to try to squeeze another viewing in with the kid before Christmas. Busy time of year.

I actually liked it better the second time, because I wasn't surprised by the jarring changes. Having become accustomed to their existence, I was able to enjoy them instead of thinking, "Hey, THAT wasn't in the book."
