A hero mech has

a lifelong 30% cbill bonus.
unique paintjob.
is a unique variant with its own traits and hardpoints.
isn't cheap.

A champion mech has

a lifelong 10% XP bonus.
Is an already existing variant, but counts as a separate one to allow you to the benefit of stacking two identical variants toward your Elite unlock.
Does not have any unique patterns.
cheaper than hero mechs, but more than benefit-less version.

I have always been told that you should NEVER buy a Champion mech.

Champion mechs are community built. They're the preferred build of a popular mech, which you can build for free...just without the 30% XP bonus you won't need after playing with it a bit anyway.

Get a Hero.

I saw that they bumped the life long XP bonus to 30% on Champs and thought I'd ask. I think I've gotten about 70 MC from the Christmas event thing so far. Is that enough to buy a mech?!

Is 70 of anything in LoL enough to buy a champion?

Still awesome. I DID have a <30 point match out of 6 or 7 games. But, our entire team got stomped. Only kill 3 enemies. Ended with 27 points, last one standing. I scored one of the kills. Rest of the games, I'm consistently over 200 in damage. Highest that I have noticed was 357 points of damage. I'm learning how to circle strafe the big guys better and tearing into their backs. I'm rethinking the cataphract because I like my speed. What's the fastest mech that can carry 2 AC5s? Probably the cataphract. . .

That's an interesting question. I'll see what builds I can come up with and update this post as I do.

Here is a 45 ton Blackjack that will go 81kph (89kph w/speed tweak). Not the fastest small medium because you can't put very large engines in them, but they can pack a punch. Very high ballistics hardpoints make it like a mini Jager. You can change a few things to accommodate extra ammo, but I liked the balance of JJ's, medium lasers, armor and ammo. Pretty cool little mech here.

BJ-1

A 50 ton Centurion that will go 97kph (107kph w/tweak). This one cost 8 million c-bills but comes with an XL300 engine, one of the most versatile engines in the game, just about every mech can put one of these in it. Even though it can fit up to a 390 engine which is insane! I went with the 300 for this build because that's what comes in it. Faster than the Blackjack with the same weapon loadout, no JJ's. I believe Leisher's YLW can also go with this build, something different than the AC20 builds you see on so many Centurions.

50 ton Hunchback 89kph (98kph w/tweak) Put in the the max engine this chassis can take, an XL275. Same loadout as the other two thus far but has a higher armor rating. AC's are located in the torso which is better for durability but not as good for the free movement of the arms.

HBK-4G

50 ton Trebuchet 97kbh (107 w/tweek) as you will notice a lot of these builds will have the two AC5's and two medium lasers, 5 tons of ammo and then the max XL engine that will carry that load then adjust the armor accordingly.

TBT-7K

How about a 60 ton Dragon, a heavy going 97kph (107kph w/tweak)! same loadout as the rest.

DRG-5N

And that's pretty much it, anything heavier won't get you any faster. I made these builds based on the fact you wanted speed. You could probably squeeze out a few extra kph on some of these builds by dropping armor, lasers, JJ's or some ammo, and putting in a larger engine but I don't think the trade off is worth the minor speed boost you would get. Funny that almost all of these builds have almost the same exact max speed.

...can you tell I like to build and tinker with mechs?

Thanks for the tips. I'll try out some trial versions, or other mechs that run about 100kph. My Cicada does 145ish. I like being able to get into a fight fast, and leave it just as fast. Run around a building and fire on the same guy a few seconds later. I don't think I want to be a brawler right now. But, it would be nice to be able to pack a bigger punch. Will probably play with lasers on the cicadas more.

I took a look at the quirks as well. My ballistic Cicada has quirks for the ER PPC. It has 1 energy HP and 4 ballistic. But it gives an ER PPC bonus?

Yeah, when u start putting heavy ballistics and ammo on a mech u start using up tonnage real quick reducing the max engine u can put in. I tried to see if any lights could carry dual AC 5's but it just ain't happening. U can but your armor and ammo is really low and even then their max speed was around 90kph or so. Not worth it. Looks like around 100kph is the max any mech can go with dual AC5s.

I noticed that quirk. But in all honesty it's not that bad. It's made to be ur mobile sniper. Fast cool downs and heat reduction are nice. And like I said ballistics just don't perform well on light mechs even tho the cicada is a medium, it's the lightest one.

I've been rockin' with my Ballistic Cicada. Don't know what you're talking about.

1 day sale

mech bays are 50% off, so if you got 300MC from the stocking stuffer event you can buy two of them. You're gonna eventually need them, so buy them.

Played about 20 games today trying to get the last 20MC I needed for the mech bays. Took about 15 stocking pulls to get it. On the bright side, I got 4 or 5 single heat sinks, and single flamers.

On the down side, apparently I missed the end of the sale by a few minutes and only got 1 mech bay for the cost.

How do you chain weapons? I know I have seen it before but can't remember where.

You have to do it when in game. Use the arrow keys to select the weapon group you want and hit the backspace button.

I disbanded the KoV unit to create TKV because, reasons... Well it won't let me create another unit. it doesn't say the name or tag has been taken it just says an error has occurred. not sure if this is because there is some 24 hour period that I cannot make another unit or what. But if one of you TKV homers could try it out then do it, because its not letting me. Or else we may have to use a whole new name.. What would we do then?!?!?!!

I'm attempting it now.

Same error.

Maybe we need to contact PGI?

These goddam XL engines cost almost as much as a whole mech but it isn't like they make the mech twice as good. What the hell.

FYI: I feel like I finally got ahead of the learning curve of this game. Re-speced my most hated mech, and now I kick ass with it. Went ahead and bought another month of premium time.... I need lots of c-bills to do my plans. All of a sudden a game in which I do less than 200 points of damage is unusual.

Probably just in time for everyone to move on to a different game, right?

I don't mind not being TKV. But if we ARE TKV, the we should BE TKV. Not some mashed up wannabe thing that's LIKE TKV. You, like KOV. We can stay KOV. But just change the guild name to Klompers of Virgins or something.

Still couldn't make a new unit as of this morning, I have a feeling it has something to do with a 48 hour window between making new units and/or using the same name. Although I tried different variations of the TKV name with upper and lower case, spaces no spaces, and using "THE" before the name, so I really have no clue what the deal is. I'll try again when I get home, if not, we might have to be Klompers of Virgins.. I actually kinda like it.

The only advantage of the XL's are the weight. So you can either use that weight to put in a larger XL for the speed or use the extra available tonnage for added firepower. The downside is that getting a side torso blown off destroys you. Not all mechs need or do better with XLs, but its nice to have some spare XL's sitting around because you never know what mechs you might want one in eventually. Good ones to own are the XL, 250, 275, 290, 300, 325, 350 these will fit in most mechs.
