9:54 am: Harvard orders students to vacate the campus, moves all courses online
Harvard University students have been asked to move out of their houses and first-year dorms by Sunday, March 15, and is moving all of its classes online for the remainder of the semester in an attempt to prevent the coronavirus from infecting its campus, according to an email from University President Lawrence Bacow. Harvard has also asked students not to return from spring break, which officially begins Saturday, and now strongly discourages group gatherings of more than 25 people.

The good news, is last time this happened
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annus_mir ... of_wonders:
In 1666 Isaac Newton, aged 23, made revolutionary inventions and discoveries in calculus, motion, optics and gravitation. As such, it was later called Isaac Newton's Annus Mirabilis. It was in this year that Isaac Newton was alleged to have observed an apple falling from a tree, and in which he in any case hit upon the law of universal gravitation (Newton's apple). He was afforded the time to work on his theories due to the closure of Cambridge University by an outbreak of plague.

That would be pretty cool. I bet they all just spend their days browsing reddit + surfing porn though. Maybe that's what I would do?
Ivy League cancels both basketball tournaments, which were to be held in Cambridge, MA. Where I'm supposed to go in 2 weeks. Risk still seems pretty low, but I don't really want to risk pneumonia.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to deploy the National Guard to New Rochelle, a coronavirus hot spot just north of New York City, he said Tuesday.
“New Rochelle has double the cases of New York City, it’s true, it’s a phenomenon,” he told reporters at a press conference.

I would if I had the free time, and it was a killer deal.
I.still think it's way overblown.

I think it would be a bigger deal if only we had tests to confirm how many cases are really out there.
I’m not sure 100% what happened but someone high up in government / healthcare has really screwed the pooch on the testing front.

Feel bad for my parents. They’ve both retired and are traveling the world as often as they can these days.
Just a few weeks ago they told me how excited they were to go to Bali, via Hong Kong. I told them very gently they needed to reconsider and follow the news.
Now they are prepping and keep asking if I want them to send me some of their stockpiled N95s. I just don’t want them getting sick outside of the USA, especially not Indonesia.

A guy who works for me (young guy, fairly newly-wed) left on a cruise Friday. Will let you know how long he's there :p

So basically every college in the country is shutting down.
Fun times in Dayton where police and students clashed. (That sentence is more dramatic than the actual "clash".) Apparently, school officials there announced at 7 p.m that in person classes were cancelled and all students needed to be packed up and gone by 8 a.m.
That's a well run institution right there. Imagine being an out of state or international student and being given 13 hours to get all your stuff together, find a new place to live, and have transportation. That's not even mentioning how they also need to find a place where they can then take their classes online.

What the fuck?
Also, why aren't they just sheltering in place with online classes? I guess they would still have cafeterias and stuff, but could make those take out only...

Bay Area morning news:
1) Virus is everywhere, just not being tested for at the right levels yet
2) Everything is cancelled by direction of the county. Specifically anything with crowds greater than >50.
3) 3 TSA agents in San Jose have it, which seems particularly bad
4) Public schools are not being cancelled, yet. Reason I heard was that public schools often provide vital lifelines of food and childcare for lower income families. Can't sever those without some help for the parents.
Supply chains seem fine. People definitely stock-piling toilet paper and pasta, but could be worse. I had to buy some weird pasta sauce for dinner this weekend.
We knew this was coming for a month+ and really fucked this one up, huh?

That's where we are at.

But not here. In fact, despite a State of Emergency for NC, the ACC tournament is not being canceled.
The mentality of "wait until something is a crisis, then we can act" just mystifies me.

This is what I meant by there's no stopping it. There was never any stopping it. They'll cancel the concert and close the senior center, but 98% of the population is still moving around, spreading it. You won't get exposed at the concert, you'll get exposed by your kid coming home from school.
