Here's what I did with the ships:
Kept my newbie p.o.s. ship until I had frigate lvl 3. Bought a Merlin.
I was doing all courier missions with the newbie ship, then switched to combat missions with the Merlin.
When buying add-ons, often the cheapest one is only marginally worse than the most expensive of the same tech level. So it's better to get a full set of cheap-o's than a few high end pieces. (Example: Basic Shield Extender was about 10k for 150hit points. Super-dooper sheild extender <still tech lvl 1> was 1million or something for 185hit points. While such differences no doubt can be meaningful later, they are rarely meaningful in the missions).

Alright. I'll be setting up the account in a few minutes. Any last minute advice on creating a dude before I start? All I remember is it should probably be Caldari.

Agree with Catt. Last night was the first time I ran into an issue where the more expensive would have been helpful. I was putting stuff on my ship and was 4 CPU short of putting the last toy on. If I spent alot of extra money on higher level equip, I could have fit it. Along with the extra 35 hit points the shield extender adds, the equip often uses a few extra points of resources. But like he said, it comes at a heavy, heavy price. Heavy missle launchers:
Standard - 32k
Highest Quality - 7 million. But, they shoot 2 seconds faster (12 seconds per round rather than 14 seconds). In this case though, they use even more resources. . .
But anyway, if you are running courier, got with a fast frigate. Combat. . . another frigate. Or, look at the destroyer. It's a really expensive frigate, basically. But damn can you load it up with guns. It will be the PK killer, one day, I think. Others hold the bad guy still while the destroyer goes in and, well, destroys them.
Troy, I think, is working towards a battleship next. I don't make the kind of money he does, so I will probably go for a nicely equiped destroyer, or frigate next. Fill the gap that his battleship leaves. Battleship with a couple destroyer/frigate escourts could be fun in .2-.3 space.

Dunno if I want to go battleship... I would be needing to make some serious money for those. A Battlecruiser tho, the Ferox, is on my want list.
One the other hand, I could go down the Assault Frigate/Cruiser path, and get crazy good resistances...
Not sure yet... I could also do a total reverse and after getting a ferox for money making, I could train up some Interceptor skills, I basically don't know what I want to do.

So... I died yesterday cuz of "lag." I think what really happened is my norton antivirus did a scan, while the game was so mem-leaked that my total mem usage was over 1GB, therefore I was in paging file.
Scan disk access with paging disk access on a crappy laptop HD meant game froze.
Note to self: stop disk access while playing.

Looking at the Hawk Assault class ship. Dizzam it looks like a decent buy for those folk looking for something past a Merlin. Or perhaps the Cormorant Destroyer class. 7 guns a-blazin'.

5 in engineering, mechanical, & caldari frigate? Yea, I can see that. But the base resists on that sumbitch are friggin' awesome.Assault ships are wicked in PVP, great resist and take very little damage due to there size and quickness....
The requirements for using one is a lil steep tho.
