I'm not sure if a cable modem is enough bandwidth for a 24-person game.

Then we should pick a particular server and take it over.

Tell your company that you need a T-1 at home.

For work purposes.

Sadly, I could probably get away with that.

I should be on later tonight if anyone else wants to play.

I'm planning on getting on tonight.

We need to get a dedicated voice server up since none of us use ICQ any more and it is hard to coordinate playtime.

I probably still have a Teamspeak server running here at home but I don't remember any of the settings for it. IIRC I set it up to run as a service, and I've never reloaded the server OS.

Doesn't the game have some sort of chat software? I've heard other peeps talking during games.

Yes, but I'm not sure if we can get any more private than the entire team hearing us.

Business-level cable modem is much better value than a T1.

T1 level upstream, cable modem (6Mbps) downstream.

Played engineer for the first time, tonight...

I liked the added functionality, but I didn't like how easily spies were able to walk in... invisible... and somehow blow my shit up.

Seems like spies are a lot more powerful than they were in TFC.

The spies are indeed a bitch this time around.

Hit a server tonight that was simply insane. Saw a lot of possible cheating. For example, my undamaged soldier was instakilled by a medic standing next to me. Not sure if they have the ability to do that, but it happened. Fought another soldier one on one and hit him directly twice with rockets and had to have hit him with splash damage on two other rockets, but he still killed me without nailing me. All his rockets missed, but a blast from his shotgun took me down. It's going to take a bit of time to really learn what's possible and what's not.

I did see some things I had never encountered, such as a medic and his patient both glowing their team color and seemingly invincible.

Also saw a few pretty cool tactics like an uberheavy. Basically, three doctors were healing a heavy all at once and he was essentially unstoppable.

The game is really fast paced compared to the last version.

The most annoying class is the pyro and I mean that in a good and bad way. A few servers I've played on, like tonight's, were spammed with pyros and when they're like that, it is simply rough. Everybody is on fire and even if you take the pyros down, most of your crew is hurting.

In terms of teamspeak, I did hear lots of team chatter, which was nice as I knew what others on my team were doing and I could tag along to support or go a different way to distract or take advantage.

I'll say this about TF2, I'm pretty impressed with the way teamwork is essential. Going lone wolf can work to get you some kills, but you won't win any games for your team that way.

About the instadeath stuff. Watch for a small window that describes the weapon they used. If there is one, then they have an upgraded weapon that does more damage and other stuff. There's a level 10 medic gun that does all kinds of crazyness. So, don't just look up in the corner, watch for the info window to pop up when it shows your death shot.

The glowing thing is 'uber charge'. The medics have it. When you are healing people, there's a counter that goes up. When it reaches 100%, you can right click and who ever you are healing become invincible along with yourself. That lasts either 20 or 30 seconds. Don't remember which.

Rarely do you hear usable stuff on the ingame voice system.

I rarely hear "crap." Usually warning like when a spy is in the base, there's a rush coming in, etc.

In the old days some idiot would put his microphone up to his speakers and play "Green Day." THAT was CRAP.

I'll keep an eye out for it.

How do you achieve these levels?

That's actually cool, but not. I don't think they needed that little perk in the game. I think that's too big of a balance shifter. My best example would be the engineer. The engineer class got the shaft in this version. Getting those turrets up and running is tough this time around. To allow an invincible medic and patient to run up and destroy that turret without the slightest effort sucks.

As for the in game voice stuff, I've heard good and bad. A few levels I've heard mature people talking strategy (once in a different language) or thanking others for their actions.

One server was annoying as hell though for voices. It was one of those "all custom maps" servers and it was filled with idiots. One guy had various sound clips to play whenever he died or killed someone. Another jackass kept piping in techo, then locked up or something so you heard the same sound over and over for several minutes. I would've left, but we actually had a pretty damn good game going.

I need to go find some TF2 FAQs.

Forgot to add that I'll probably be on again tonight after 10.

I should be on between 10 and 11.

Do we have a way to coordinate servers yet?

Well, I can look at the Steam friends list and see when you're online and what you're playing. I learned that when Cake contacted me the other night as I was installing TF2. I didn't click his name to see what happened, but maybe it'll lead us to where that player is playing?

I think I have a new gaming addiction. I've been thinking about TF2 today and read a FAQ on the Engineer during lunch.

Ha.

Having now played both, I think Quake Wars is more better.

Granted, TF2 has more diverse character types.

The uber doesn't = auto turret death. If you have it upgraded to missles, those missles knock it's target all over the place. Because you don't die, it just moves you. I've been killed by turrets because their missles will bounce me and pin me into a corner. I was stuck there till the uber went away and then was killed. Other might be better at killing turrets while ubered, but it hasn't given me a big advantage yet. I normally use the uber to run past them rather than kill them.

I've heard good and bad on the in game comms as well. It's not 100% crap. But it's enough crap that I have it perma muted.

You achieve leveled up weapons by achieving. . . the achievements. Healing a bunch of points without doing any damage is one for the medic. "Do no harm" or something like that. There's a hot key that shows all the achievements and which ones you have. Not sure what all I did to get it, but I have the level 2 medic gun. Not all classes have upgrades yet. They haven't implimented them all yet. The HWG is rumored to be the one they are working on now. Medic and Pyro are the only ones that I'm sure have upgrades. Not sure about others.

To hook up with friends, instead of searching for servers, click the friends tab. It will show what friends are logged in and which servers they are playing on. Right click, select join. It makes hooking up with friends VERY simple. If we had a dedicated TS server (hosted by one of us or a public one that's always up and available), then we just always log into that as well so voice comms easy to connect as well.

Shift tab brings up your friends list and you can send messages to them ICQ style (sort of). Also tells you what game they are playing and I believe you can connect to their server from there also. I normally do it from the friends tab cause it's easier.

You are wrong Gordon. Quake Wars sucked.

Gordo found a great server tonight. He started at 8 and I joined at 10. "FNF" was the server name or something like that.

Good players and very mature. I never saw anything that looked like cheating nor was the comm chatter stupid. Every team on was on had people talking strategy.

Most of the matches were exactly what I want out of this game with capture points being defended by the entire team and assaulted by the entire other team with little time left on the clock.

There were a few dominated matches, but even those were ok as the dominated team would find a way to hunker down and prevent the dominating team from winning outright.

Only one game was ridiculously quick and I only remember it because I got some sort of achievement.

I also noticed one player who was really fucking good, "Captain Inoculous" or something. He nailed me with a Level 10 fire weapon once with pretty much insta killed me, but out of all the times I fought him, that was the only time he used such a weapon. So they must not have access to them 100% of the time.

Hopefuly you added it to your favorites list so you can get to it again.

The upgraded weapons are available 100% of the time. But you don't have to use them. You can pick which version of the weapon you want to use at respawn.
