He may have been deathly allergic and didn't have his EpiPen on him, so was afraid for his life if she got close.

I personally hate getting friendly, unleashed dog slobber on me, when on a hiking trail. I love that every national park has banned dogs from the trails. I love that almost everyone keeps their dogs off them.

Many people are, but it's just sniffles or sneezing, etc. And being outdoors makes it much less likely with the airflow.
