Katrina always gets discussed as this monster hurricane, and it was, but no more so than other Cat 5s. A poorly designed city run by corrupt, incompetent, racist assholes led to a perfect place to make her mark on history. Andrew was easily the more impressive Cat 5 and that was a long time before the current "global warming makes everything worse" stuff.

Just to further the point about the alarmists, did you see the coverage of the most recent hurricane? It was "the sky is falling" and amplified. One forecaster went viral for breaking down and crying about it on air. Yeah, it was a Cat 5, came from a less common source (less common, but does happen), and did hit Florida, but was it worse than previous hurricanes? No. The fact that it was out of the news pretty rapidly says a lot. The hurricane prior was worse and that was a Cat 4. The where, when, and other factors seem to play more of a role in a storm's damage than just the storm itself.

And alarmists might be the wrong word here. How about "Hype Men", "Clickbait Artists", or my personal favorite, "Climaterrorists".

Their job is to get eyeballs. Does setting people at ease get eyeballs? Nope. Screaming out the sky is falling does though. Of course, this isn't just weathermen, it's all media. And I should also note this was going on long before Climate Change. Over 20 years ago Bill Spencer, a local meteorologist, was accused of being a Climaterrorist for the way he intentionally WAY overhyped local weather events.

Bill Spencer got banned from Topsail Island, NC (near where I used to live) because he went there during a hurricane, spouted a lot of bullshit, and hurt the rental industry (main industry of that island).

Yesterday it was 32 and rainy/icy. Had to take the trash can 70 feet up the driveway.

Had no shoes on. So took off my socks and took it barefoot.
