This is one of the worst parts of sports, imho. Injuries happen, but certain players seem to have their careers completely derailed by them, and that sucks.

Listen, I don't want his life to be over either and have him rot in jail, but more needs to be done to create good out of this horrible situation.

How about in cases like this we give the offender 3-10 and with good behavior they serve 3, but once they're out:
-Mandatory community service for X number of years.
-Your car(s) are permanently fitted with those DUI kits.
-You are permanently barred from buying or using alcohol or legalized marijuana.
-You are subject to random pop in home visits and pee tests for the rest of your life.

Any failure to comply with these conditions results in finishing the rest of your sentence. Furthermore, the same conditions apply once you get done with that sentence and any repeat failure of those conditions means life in prison. Sorry, but you've proved three times that you don't want to live by society's rules and you don't care if you endanger others.

Honestly, this never happening before is truly shocking. Why the hell wouldn't HCs take a step back in the preseason? Preseason is about getting everyone ready, coaches too.

That does seem pretty odd. But maybe they don't want to be usurped or have their Asst hired by someone else. Owner's like "Huh, that Asst is pretty good..."

Fair point, but if you're assistants aren't being stolen, you're doing a terrible job.

I didn't want to jinx it, but the word out of Chicago is that Fields is playing super well this year and completely different.

Both TDs were "pass short left," which implies good WRs and bad D. Imho. it's the first preseason game, it's about as worthless as football gets. Call me in 5 weeks.
