In the countdown to the new episodes, over the next few weeks there are some "best of" shows on, it looks like it is celebrities talking about their fave Doctor moments. Think VH1 talking about the 80's.
Anyway, they had this comedian I've seen here and there talking about how in S5E1 The Doctor was trying to figure out what kind of food he liked.
Anyway, he was asked what sounded more appetizing, American-named "Fish Sticks," or English-named "Fish Fingers," in regard to the "fish fingers and custard" scene. He said, to the best of my recollection, "Well, 'fish fingers' doesn't really sound gross, since we typically don't think about fish having fingers... unless you count those little bones in the fins which are the evolutionary precursors of fingers."
The guy got all kinds of respect from me for saying that.

That was a weird episode. I liked it, but ... weird. And a bit of a cop-out on the whole "now we're going to end up time traveling around with a baby" bit.

So........................... how did baby Mels end up the Ponds' BFF? Did the Doctor do that when he was "trying to find her?" Did he put them together as kids on purpose?

Well, either the Doctor did that himself - which is unlikely on the whole because you'd think he'd bring baby Melody back to Amy and Rory instead - or the bad guys did as part of planting her where they knew she'd run into the Doctor someday.
Either way, we'll probably never see those bits. I think the whole baby Melody bits are now done, and we are moving on.
Which is part of why it feels weird.

Does Moffat have kids? I mean, there's more, like, feelings and stuff, than just knowing, "Well, we didn't get to really know our baby but our kid grew up to be River, and she's pretty cool, so whatever."

Exactly. Then again, it's not like they planned the pregnancy or even knew about it until giving birth. So there's a hint of a basis for letting it go, sort of. If you ignore all the bonding that took place while they were trying to find & rescue Amy.
If they leave it like this, it's messy. But if they go on and find her, they change the future that has already happened in the past, which is also messy. Moffat dropped the ball here, IMO. Not so much that I didn't still enjoy it, though.

Me working out timeline junk...
The Doctor (probably the ganger, as he's not aware of the timeline) puts young Melody (River Song) in Florida and sets it up so that when she needs help, it calls the most important powerful person on the planer (Nixon).
Later Melody regenerates in the alley (as seen) and becomes the black little girl, who then goes to England.
I figure the Doctor's ganger (from The Rebel Flesh) finds out that he has a limited lifespan, so he goes on a 200 year vacation which is why he's so much older and was having such a wild time before he dies at the lake.
With his lifespan depleted, he goes to the lake so that The Silence (Amy saw one of them at the late) can witness the astronaut killing him.
What I noticed: The justice-police-people in the shape-shifting robot know that River Song killed the Doctor at the lake. They don't say it was Melody (which is the name of the little girl when she was in the suit), and when they bring up the records for "River Song" they show the older River generation's body.
Yeah, River was there, but she only shot at the person in the space suit.

I'm hoping they do something with that. There's usually a reason for strange wardrobe choices... remember in the forest on the.... Byzantine, was it? With the Weeping Angels? Suddenly there's a scene with different clothes, telling Amy to "Remember..."

I remember that part now. I didn't catch that the first time through, but a few months later when I was showing the series to a friend she wondered why I got all excited at that bit and I couldn't tell her then just how cool that was.
But I don't think this is like that. I think he just decided to die with style.
As to the Dr. Ganger, didn't he melt and die at the end of the Rebel Flesh?

...never existing didn't stop Rory though.
And now that I think about it, The Master could use the Tardis to create a paradox that brought the entire future human race back in time, and The Doctor couldn't do one woman.

Old Amy had put on a few pounds, so dumping her was the obvious choice.
