World Cup 2014
I think the rest of the world looks at our soccer team like the Bad News Bears. They don't really hate them, and some enjoy rooting for them because we're such HUGE underdogs.
However, once we win our first World Cup...

First job out of college a co-worker was convinced we'd win one by 2014.Malcolm wrote:None of us will be alive to see that. However, once we win our first World Cup...
I said "No fucking way"
Too bad we haven't spoken in 15 years... I'd sure like to collect that $100, if I could remember his name.
It's not me, it's someone else.
The year isn't over yet...
But I get the guy's sentiment. When we finally showed up on the world stage in...1990?...and soccer turned a corner in this country there was a feeling elsewhere of "Fuck, now the Americans are going to dominate this too."

There was? That was back when I actually gave a shit about soccer. I don't remember anyone except the perennially shitty teams we beat anyway being scared of us "dominating" a damn thing.Leisher wrote:The year isn't over yet...

Americans dominate one hugely popular cosmopolitan team sport without our nationality stamped in it directly: basketball ... when enough of the players give a fuck.
Hockey? Canada.
Baseball? I'd go Dominican Republic or somewhere in Latin America.
Soccer? Sure as fuck not us. Goes between Europe and South America, probably whoever bribes the refs better that year.

It wasn't all over the place but I remember when they made it to the final 8 in 02 a few Italian newspapers and a Portuguese one since the US beat their "golden generation" had headlines that were basically "Well it was fun while it lasted."Malcolm wrote:There was? The top teams don't fear us yet, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, and Spain(despite this tournament) but they know that can't dick around either except for Brazil and Germany. The rest of the better teams feel like they SHOULD beat the US but it isn't a given anymore.
In the UK and lesser euro countries its 50% have their heads in the sand and think since we went 50 years without caring they can kill us and 50% thinking its only a matter of time.
