MP3 Players
iPod, PSP, flash player, etc.
The iPod is the most popular and has every gadget to go with it, but it's the most RIAA friendly.
The PSP is also a game/movie system, but it's bulky and the games suck and the movies I'd never buy.
The flash players I know little about except I hear they're the easiest for file transfers.
Anyone own any of the above devices? Anyone know anything about them? I'm trying to decide which one I want.

I've got an iRiver. It's flash-memory based so it's much smaller than an iPod (mine's 256Meg, but they do come larger), but it's got all the bells and whistles: FM radio receiver (which can be recorded as MP3), mic for voice recording (again as MP3), a line-in plug (MP3), a timer mode to have it turn itself on at a set time to play/record/whatever, and best of all a switch on the bottom that disables all the other buttons so you can't accidently press buttons with it in your pocket. USB 2.0 plug to synch with your computer. Runs forever on one AA battery.
Love it. Wish it had more space, but at $60 from eBay having a mere 4 hours of music is something I can live with.

Got an Archos mp3 player. 20GB o' storage, radio capability, voice recording, 30 sound buffering, battery lasts about 8 - 10 hours. Slightly bulky & the OS chokes sometimes, but otherwise alright.

40GB Ipod photo. Wife uses it. The RIAA friendly stuff never bothered us. We put our music on it, and it plays. Have never tried using it as a transfer/sharing device. I don't like Itunes cause it's slow and bulky though. But, once the entire library was on it, I haven't had to deal with Itunes since.
Pretty hooked up here.
I bought one of the new 6GB Ipod Minis (Blue, with the Enscription "I am haunted by waters" bonus points for the reference), I use it both for running and working out and just walking to class...
I have three different headphones:
1)Bose Triport (super nice, don't get used outside the house or car or plane, Also used for FPSers.
2) Ear Buds, These are for running and working out, they are pretty nice, but mainly they just stay in place whilst moving.
3)Upgraded pieces, these give pretty good bass and clairty, but aren't as good as the big Triports. These are the walking to class ones, not to mention they are white, which is like a tell-tale sign "I have an Ipod"
Music comes from Ares, and is all in my laptop.

My wife wants one. It will NOT be an iPod. There are many manufacturers that make equivilant (if not better) mp3 players for the same or smaller price. www.crutchfield.com has a lot of good options.

I have a friend who wants to get one too, but he has a ton of music files and audio books and such that may not be legal in the eyes of the RIAA. Will an iPod play all those or will there be problems?
See, he doesn't care about getting new songs off of iTunes. He just wants to be able to play his existing music and any new ones he may come across by accident.

The RIAA-friendliness really only refers to the iTunes store, and not really anything to do with the iPod itself. All music sold through iTunes has DRM. iPod will play any MP3 or AAC music file.
It will not play WMA, but, hey, who gives a flip.

Bullshit. I'd put the Dell MP3 player up against the apple crap anyday. The control surfaces for the IPod sucks donkey balls and iTunes is a goddamn pain in the ass. They are not equivalent. My wife wants one. It will NOT be an iPod. Gimme Dell and Napster over Apple crap.

I'm getting there myself. I've discovered some issues :I got an earlier version of one of those, when they first hit 20GB.Got an Archos mp3 player. 20GB o' storage, radio capability, voice recording, 30 sound buffering, battery lasts about 8 - 10 hours. 1) I'd prefer an mp3 player that can broadcast to some low-end FM band instead of having the damned adapter for the tape deck.
2) How in the fuck do you make it so that it can't charge & play at the same time, or more appropriately, why can't it run off my cigarette lighter whilst I'm driving instead of draining its own battery?
3) I fdisk'd my hard drive. It's becoming a fucking hunt for the Holy goddamned Grail to find the proper USB driver for the damned thing.
I still like the audio-to-mp3 recorder option on there, though.
