TV: The new Battlestar Galactica series

Friday nights is the new one, not sure if/when repeats occur.

Same time as Mail Call, I think, but it repeats at, like, midnight if you don't want to miss Gunny.

Does anyone remember what happened in the OLD series when Galactica hooked up with Pegasus?

Sci-Fi Channel used to run the old series, a couple years ago.

They met by surprise kind of like in the new episode.

The guy from Airplane!... the flight controller who "picked a bad week to quit sniffing glue..." was the Captain.

There was indeed a few "differences in command style," but they didn't actively go to war against each other, as appears to be happening in the new series.

They attack a cylon something-or-other, huge fight, Pegasus ends up having to go one direction, Galactica in another, and they never saw each other again.

One or 2 pilots from pegasus end up on galactica.

I also loved the fact that there is finally a space series that addresses the idea that a ship in space can reorient itself 180 degrees, yet still be on its original flight path. I gave a "hurah!" first time I saw them do that.
Lets see, Babylon5 and Firefly to name 2.

Ok, Bubba......... I just watched all of Firefly, and nowhere did I see the situation I was describing.

I think the only thing left to say is that I'll see you in hell.

I can understand why most shows ignore that point of physics. It makes space battles more difficult with traditionally oriented ships. Essentially in order to make a worthwhile combat turn ships would need to orient to closer to 90 degrees and blast sideways, but then the guns that are stuck on the front of the ships aren't as useful.

The Millinium Flacon - with it's non-centered guns - is about the most realistic design I've seen for space battles, although of course they still didn't handle the physics of manouvers right in Star Wars. *sigh*

I loved how a common combat tactic for vipers was to get a cylon right on their tail, then flip the ship and start shooting while going backwards.

I also liked the episode where the cylons were coming.,.. then decided to turn around... so they flipped 180 over their nose, and flew back upside-down relative to the camera angle. All other shows in the past would have the ships then needlessly reorient to be "right side up" relative to camera angle.

Good stuff.

They didn't do much combat maneuvering in space at all. The best show that they had a grasp of inertia in space was in the last episode and how Early's ship could remain so close without any adjustments or any propellant. Or, if I remember, they turned the ship somewhat close to 90deg, then accellerated. The ship didn't stop moving to the 'side' when reorienting itself. I'll have to recheck. You should see a better grasp of their space combat dynamics in the movie where there's more money to be spent on such.

And, BTW, G, go watch the first episode again. The Reaver ship does a complete flip from deceleration (using its main engines) to an entry angle for the atmosphere. Now, kiss my perceptive ass.
