.... and not because they were singled out.

The women failed the introductory Combat Endurance Test, a punishing test of physical strength and endurance, officials at Marine Corps headquarters said Tuesday. The latest class began March 28 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., with 110 lieutenants participating. Ninety-six men passed the initial endurance test. Twelve men and two women — the only female Marines taking part — failed.

So, the number of girls who can run as fast as the average guy is roughly zero.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the high school 100 m record for my home state of Ohio. Brandon Saine of Dayton ran a 10.38 in 2006.

The current women’s world record holder, Florence Griffith-Joyner, ran a 10.49 in 1988*.

Dayum.

Which is why things like this are for attention whoring, and not reality.

And why the Women's National Soccer team scrimmages against the men's U17 team. And loses, 8-2.

USWNT in the past frequently lost to U-15 boy club teams.

Ouch.

"I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibility that (one day) we'll see a female LeBron (James)," Battier, who added that it'll happen "in our lifetime," told ESPN.com.

Only way that happens unless sex change surgery is involved.

Nah, it'll happen. The stats shown earlier talk about the speed of the fastest 1 out of 100 girls. There are millions of girls across the country. If we limit it to 1 in a million being good enough to play competitively, that still leaves a handful of possibilities.

Can the average women athlete compete? Almost certainly not. But this isn't about the average, it's about the far far end of the bell curve, which makes it possible.

Problem is the pro sports leagues are already inhabited by the men who are far, far above the bell curve. Take a look at the average height/weight of the NFL offensive lineman for the past 5 decades versus height/weight for a normal American male. The pro sports players ain't getting any standard deviations closer to the mean. Every other pro sport has this pattern. You will also note the Olympics make a distinction between the genders for a reason.

No, no it won't. Unless that person had a penis when they were born. Look at the US WNT example above. These are the EXTREME of the soccer world - The very best females in the world (give or take). And despite being the best in the world, the pinnacle of female soccer playing, there are thousands and thousands and thousands of men who are better.

And the 1 in 100 in women was as good as 25 in 100 men, iirc. That's 2.5 standard deviations versus just over 0.5 std deviations for men.

So, statistically, if we expand from the limited sample to the entire US, how many girls might challenge some of the better boys?

And the WNT isn't a team designed to compete against men. It's designed to compete against women. Is there not even one woman on that team that could hold her own on a men's team? We aren't talking about admitting an entire women's team to the NBA, but just one exceptional - practically mutant - player. I predict that might well happen.

As to the NFL, that's another matter. I can imagine a female kicker as a possibility, but football is all about muscle and mass and the few women that might be able to pull it off will probably lean mores towards female body-building.

I am just skimming this thread, but did I see the woman world record holder in the sprint was slower that a pretty good male high school athlete?

Yeah, none of those women are good enough. And I was expanding it past the US, since the US is (generally, over the past 10 years), the best team in the world. Brazil and a couple of others are roughly the same league.

But none of those women would play for the men's national team. I doubt they'd even make the 4th league in most professional leagues. Super mutant freak woman is still 2 std devs behind the men.

Granted, it's with 18 years between her record and his, but ... yes.

The best girls might have a shot at the above average boys. However, the pro sports of the U.S. (and rest of the world, as far as I know) are inhabited by the best of the men. So, to answer your question, "Some." But pro sports aren't dominated by the better boys. You have to be able to hang with the best boys.

Is there not even one woman on that team that could hold her own on a men's team? We aren't talking about admitting an entire women's team to the NBA, but just one exceptional - practically mutant - player. I predict that might well happen.

No, it won't. The sexual dimorphism in this species does not make the female physically more powerful, period. Here. Here's the one of the few chicks who could hang with contemporaries back in the day, male or female, for a given sport. That sport was golf, though.

My wife thinks the entire argument is partially invalid due to the fact that women make less/have fewer opportunities to make money in professional sports.

that suggests that given identical training conditions, 1000 random men and 1000 random women could all become athletes with.... not sure how to phrase what I am thinking. Equal caliber athletes.

I think that Y-chromosome is going to change things nearly every time, no matter how good your Ivan Drago training facility is.

Were the WNBA players dunking and out-backboard-shattering their NBA counterparts, they'd be getting paid more.

This was a bad thing to share with my wife.

We were unable to find Joan of Arc's 40 time.
