I have the same thing with my NAS file server. But for programs that are meant to access the NAS and would freak out if it's not ready for it (like uTorrent, Media Monkey, Doppler, etc) I have little DOS launchers that hit up a file, wait a few seconds, close the file, then run the software in question. Back to one click, and let the computer do the whole process without me.

Parts ordered. Hopefully won't need a new power supply (have a 850 watt supply from a couple of years ago). And hopefully I can put it together. At this point, I would pay someone to do it. But not as much as the custom shops charge to do it ($1k+).

My laptop screen also died Friday, looking like it dropped a bit too much acid. Work has agreed to buy me a new one, so looking at the Precision 6700.

Time to install CPU, RAM, heatsink, hook up to power supply, and test: 10 minutes.

Time to replace old mobo, clean out dust, install new mobo, hookup: 30 minutes.

Time to expand RAID set from 6 3TB drives to 8 3TB drives: 16 hours

Time to regret expanding RAID set from 6 3TB drives to 8 3TB drives: 1 minute.

Guess I'll pick this back up tomorrow with video card, fans, etc....

Apparently motherboards dont have PATA connectors. My CD (DVD?) drive was still a PATA... I tried to load Windows 7 via USB, but then it told me that my boot RAID (6x750GB drives) couldnt be used for some weird reason.

Thinking of just saying "fuck it all" and buying a SATA DVD player + Samsung 830.

It's not just a machine for me, but also a work machine.

So let's say north of $4K, but less than $5K.
And BAM blown power supply.

You must be German.

Things break, it happens. It'll be fixed shortly. Total cost to me: $0.

Explain to me again why that's a bad thing...

LOL.

Well, for my machine... turns out Windows 7 gets confused by having too many disks attached to it, so I removed my internal RAID card (the 24TB array), and then everything worked fine... patching patching patching...
