Gabe Newell's a smart guy. I've been saying for awhile that as the new digital economy starts taking over, the only way for corporations to battle piracy is goodwill. They have to make sure they are so good to their customers that people will be eager to pay them for stuff. DRM is an aberration. It's the result of businesses applying a traditional brick-n-mortar mindset to the digital economy. Companies that continue to insist on DRM will eventually go out of business.

There's your million dollar idea right there.
Travel the country as a consultant explaining this very concept to gaming companies, music companies, movie studios, restaurants, etc.
With money not going as far as it used to, folks are going to shop where they can stretch it farthest, or at least, with someone they like (and trust?).

It's not a new idea. That's how businesses used to be run, back before they got so big that they could afford to treat their customers poorly because they could reach so many they didn't need to worry much about repeat business.
But the internet has made the world a much smaller place. It's given a way for far-flung people to easily inform each other of their experiences, making word-of-mouth a big player again. And so big business will have to go back to that old personal touch, in the long run, to stay competitive with whatever company does it first in each industry.
I think of this as "Wheaton's Law of Business"
DRM is just a specific case of that general principle.
