I caught the Clint Eastwood one talking about Detroit, and how it is half time for America and "the world will once again hear the roar of our engines."

Has Clint seen the price of gas, lately?

I think it showed they have a sense of humor about an urban myth. It also showed someone eating their product and probably made a lot of folks at home think "It's been a while since I've had a Twinkie."

What made me curious about the ad was that all these guys were thrilled to see each other after the apocalypse and sad that some other guy didn't make it. The first thing I thought was "Where are the chicks? Why are these guys so happy?"

Yeah, I did not dig that spot at all. I'm usually all for "ra ra go US!" bits, but that one seemed way, way off base. It really came across as propaganda and not truth. It reminded me of an ostrich with its head in the sand.

Yeah... and since Hostess is bankrupt, I guess any publicity is good publicity.

Gay people own Chevys?

I didn't see the Eastwood ads. But I liked the Eminem one from last year.

“We were sitting there watching and [the owner] called as soon as they wrapped up and Peyton was walking off the stage with [Indianapolis Colts owner Jim] Irsay,” said a junior executive with one of the many teams rumored to be interested in Manning. “[Our general manager] kept assuring him, ‘We’re going to get a meeting with Manning and we’re going to do all our homework.’

Did anyone see where Jim Harbaugh (or John...whichever one coaches the Ravens) blasted New England this week saying all of their titles have asterisks thanks to Spygate.

Love it!

Cal Tech gets NCAA sanctions.
The academic-oriented Division III school received a public reprimand, three years of probation and a 2012-13 postseason ban in men's basketball and 11 other sports for using 30 ineligible student-athletes the past four years.
At issue is Caltech's unique academic policy allowing students to shop for courses during a three-week period each quarter before cementing their class schedules. Since many students weren't registered for all the classes they attended during that period, that meant under NCAA rules they were not considered full-time students when they took the field.

Hey, NCAA... fuck it, nevermind.

That's ridiculous.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Penn State.

I don't think NCAA should do anything to Penn State. What Sandusky was doing didn't affect the program. He broke the law. Should Michigan have been punished when that coach who got fired a long time ago got drunk or whatever the hell it was? (Actually, did MI get in trouble for it?!). NCAA isn't in place to enforce laws. It's there to keep good, clean sports happening. Ya, I know, they don't. But that doesn't mean they should punish Penn state. The state of Pennsylvania should punish Penn State.

Ohio State got busted because their players sold their own property without anyone, at that time, in the program knowing about it. They were already at the school, and it didn't affect the on field product one bit. However, this up coming year they won't be eligible for any bowl games, including the Big Ten championships because of those violations, which were committed by people who aren't even with the program anymore.

Oh, and by the way, none of those players broke any laws.

So "laws" and what "affects the program" doesn't mean shit.

Should Michigan have been punished when that coach who got fired a long time ago got drunk or whatever the hell it was? (Actually, did MI get in trouble for it?!).

No, that was a personal thing that didn't involve the school in any way, and they weren't punished.

NCAA isn't in place to enforce laws. It's there to keep good, clean sports happening. Ya, I know, they don't. But that doesn't mean they should punish Penn state.

Here's where I'm pretty sure you haven't followed the latest news. The Freeh report shows that Penn State's administrators knew about Sandusky's crimes, helped to cover them up, and thus, allowed him to continue molesting kids. One of those administrators was Joe Pa.

If Penn State was harboring a child molester so he could keep coaching that's something that involves the NCAA. Especially when you consider that the head coach was helping to hide the crimes.

We're talking about protecting a child molestor who is working within your football program and using it to molest kids.

Even if this was an SEC school the NCAA would have to do something.

NCAA prez hints at big sanctions.

The players selling goods they earned while playing (Trophies, jerseys, etc) and getting free tattoos made them paid professional players and were thus ineligible to play college ball. But OSU let them anyway.

I knew they were all covering for him, and they should all go to jail for that. If they can prove they did it so he could keep coaching, then the NCAA might have to do something. But I don't know what Sandusky was doing there. Was he actually involved in the program, or just one of the boys?

Ya, over all, I don't have enough info to have a strong opinion. I'm just assuming that the NCAA will do what's best for the NCAA. Again. Where it goes overboard for minor stuff that won't hurt the NCAA and does nothing on major stuff that WOULD hurt the NCAA.

Uh, no.

First of all, OSU didn't let them, Tressel failed to report it when he found out. He's gone.

Secondly, you're missing an important element. OSU gave the players awards for their on field play. The players then sold those items without the school's knowledge. That's not the school paying players.

If you think it is, then I believe the NCAA let Michigan off easy when they punished the school for extra practice time. Obviously, the school enslaved the players...

I knew they were all covering for him, and they should all go to jail for that. If they can prove they did it so he could keep coaching, then the NCAA might have to do something. But I don't know what Sandusky was doing there. Was he actually involved in the program, or just one of the boys?

The allegations go back many, many years. He was allowed to continue coaching, to retire with honor, maintain an office on campus, and most importantly, have access to kids via camps, the school, and that charity.

Did Penn State gain a competitive advantage due to the cover up? An obvious advantage? No. However, I would argue that they did benefit from not reporting the crime. They avoided a scandal that could have tarnished their reputation, particularly among recruits.

Stephen A. Smith made a great point on ESPN tonight. He said that Penn State is a state school, and he thinks the state of Pennsylvania needs to take action since it funds Penn State.

Still, a football coach molested kids while he was associated with Penn State's football program. His bosses, including the head football coach, covered it up. All of these men deserve jail. I think the school will have no choice, but to disassociate itself from Joe Pa.

Football sanctions? You can't deny that this is football related.

What punishments beyond that? Time will tell.
