Lex Luthor is...

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Vin Diesel?

I just hope the writers understand that Luthor isn't a thug.

Just like Bane wasn't a thug.

Vin Diesel playing a brilliant criminal mastermind? I can't see it. If he were able to pull that off, I may have to re-evaluate my opinion of him as an actor (not that I don't like him, but he's not really a deep character actor that I can tell).

To Gordo's point about Bane, I really couldn't understand why they made him a mindless, rampaging zombie. This was the guy that broke Batman, both physically and phsychologically. And they made him Soloman Grundy (was that his name?).

I wouldn't write off Vin quite that quickly. I too have my doubts about his acting ability, but don't forget that he has probably been quite limited in choices due to his physique. A lot of movie makers probably have some preconceived notion of his acting without knowing if he is any deeper.

Vin is also a huge geek... he was an expert D&D player when he was young. No kidding. I'd count on him knowing how Lex would need to be played.

Not saying he doesn't know how it should be played, just not sure he can pull it off. I mean, I love Clint Eastwood, but I just watched Mystic River last night and I've had to conclude that Clint's a better director than he is an actor (and Heartbreak Ridge is a "must have" in my collection).

Ahh, I see. You're worried he doesn't have the range.

He also created and runs a company that makes video games.

I'm a Vin fan, but I am worried because I truly do think they cast him simply because he's built, bald (there is a Luther that isn't bald and he was in the Doomsday storyline, which was the basis of Kevin Smith's script, which might come back since that asshole Burton is gone), and can pull off "bad guy". Luthor is a true gentleman, outside of trying to conquer the world all the time. He's high class and in his early 50s, yet still in peak condition.

I worried Luthor will be portrayed as a young, rich spoiled brat in the new film.

In all honesty, Gene Hackman was a great Lex Luthor. Its just too bad that the Superman movies he was in were about as "serious" as the Batman TV show.

They need to just bring Kevin Smith in to run the whole show. I'd feel quite safe that Superman would be good if he were in charge.

Wasn't he responsible for Daredevil?

Excellent!

I am fully confident that Vin can pull of this role, if he's signed and if the producers/directors/writers let him do it right. I think he's got what it takes to play the evil supergenius quite well.

No.

He did write the Daredevil comic book for a year and his run was critically acclaimed, but he had nothing to do with the movie.

Kevin Smith's Superman script was loved by everyone in Hollywood except for Tim Burton who tossed it out in favor of his own ideas on how Superman should be.

Smith is a huge comic book fan. He even owns his own comic book store in Jersey. He knows the characters as he has been following them his whole life. His own criticism of comic book films is that Hollywood takes too much freedom with the existing material.

He'd be just fine creating a film based on an existing comic.

I am fully confident that Vin can pull of this role, if he's signed and if the producers/directors/writers let him do it right. I think he's got what it takes to play the evil supergenius quite well.

I hope you're right, but I haven't seen him in any role that's even remotely like Lex Luthor so I'm not convinced.

Vin would make a great Superman. He'd be great fighting Sean Penn or Nicholas Cage as Superman.
I just hope they don't try to get too technical with terms like "Kal-El". It'd be great if that ditched that sissy costume (especially the cape), and made it so Superman couldn't fly. Oh oh oh! And make Superman fight a giant spider! You know, the spider is the deadliest predator in the animal kingdom.

Make it a giant camel spider, and you'd have a movie that would not only be scary, but would fuck you up for life.

I forgot all about that producer.

In case you haven't seen, this guy has fucked this project up so bad that two new producers have been brought in. I believe you'll still find the story on the main movie page of cinescape.com.
