I decided to start upgrading some peripherals I've been ignoring for a long time... I've used the same mouse, keyboard, and speakers on the last 3 systems I've built.

I have been using 2 basic Microsoft laser mouses... I bought one when they first came out, and purchased the same model again when it died, years later... and I never realized until recently that not all laser mice were the same. Like a digital camera or scanner, mice can be rated by how many dpi they can read.

I always preferred ball mice when it came to FPS's. I could never get the fine movement when zoomed in in 'sniper mode.' That's because I never knew it, but my old Microsoft laser mouse had a low dpi rating.

So I just bought this Logitech G5, and what a difference. It actually has an on-the-fly dpi adjustment thingy, so with a click of a button on the mouse I can set it from middle-dpi from web surfing, to 2000 dpi for playing me some games. In 2000 dpi I can move the cursor from one corner of a 20" screen while only moving the mouse about an inch and a half on the pad. The mouse utilities would also let me customize what the dpi max setting can be, if I decided it was a smidgen too sensitive. For example, I could set it to be 1900 dpi, it I wished.

Another cool attribute is the mouse when can be pivoted side to side, in case you had a large image in a browser window, for example.

But ok, time to go to a movie, so GOOD MOUSE. The end.

I've been using the same mouse since Christmas. I like it alot too. It has weights you can put in it. . . and that's cool.

The sensativity on the fly is useful when you are zoomed in on your sniper rifle, but need to turn around. Instead of unzooming, turning, re-zooming, you can push a button speeding the mouse up, turn, then push button to slow it down. You stayed zoomed in the whole time. You can also vary the sensativity between the axises (axi?). Many people have the x axis faster than the y cause you do alot of left/right stuff, but not as much up/down stuff. I keep mine even though.

I have no idea what to do with the weights. I don't even have them in at the moment... maybe I should max them out and see what the difference feels like.

Never before has it occurred to me that a mouse could be customizedly weighted to be more comfortable. But the gamer mags say it's a kewl feature, so I dunno. I better follow the flock on this one.

I've used this mouse with maximum weights and minimum weights, and I can't tell the damned diffrence between the two.

Don't make the presence or absence of "balancing weights" a factor of your decision when you buy a mouse that basically supports the weight of your hand and doesn't balance on anything.

So should I get this mouse, or is there a newer/cooler one to get?

I still like mine. Recently bought a Microsoft Sidewinder for the laptop... but this Logitech still feels better in my hand.

I really like this mouse. However, I've recently broken my wheel. I have two other mice to try for now. One is the G9, and the other is a Razer Lachesis. Going to try the G9 first, and see how it compares to my G5.

My belief is that any good gaming mouse will work the same (for me). So it's going to come down to what feels best in my hand. Which one do I think I can hold on to for hours at a time.

Doesn't hurt mine. But then there's not much there to hurt.

EDIT: There's a little bit of lag discussion here: http://futuremark.yougamers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6705

Amazon offered $50 for signing up for an Amazon credit card, so I did. I figured: Hey, free G5 mouse.

You don't worry about having too many credit cards on your report? I thought too many lines of credit was bad, mkay. I'm not trying to pry, I'm hoping someone that knows more than me can school me.

We were discussing this today. The word in our little group today was that they are now looking at your total credit limit. Very high limit on CC's totalled together is bad. They are looking at it as potential debt you could incur in the near future.
