Wasn't it Sun that pushed the network PC about 10 years ago?

It won't catch on until the day that network technology makes every connection 100% reliable. I.E. until world-wide-wireless is the norm, not the rare exception.

There is a scheme, weighted fair queuing or something, that can damn near guarantee an upper limit on how long it takes a packet to get transmitted. Proved theoretically in some class I was taking at the time.

Which wouldn't matter at all if all the lights on your cable modem are dark.

Indeed. I'm already considering splitting up my pipe. I currently have phone, internet, and TV all coming through the same wire. Not having any of that for an extended period leaves me considering eggs and baskets and whatnot.

Yep. & it was a stupid idea back then, too.

There's ain't no way I'm ever going to trust someone's central server to hand out all the apps I want to use. Ever. Unless I get the be the server admin. & in that case, why not have the softs already on my machine?

Eh, I'm used to idiots being in charge of my computer. I work for a college.

But I'd need some assurances that there would be zero problems. The technology just isn't there yet.

Oddly enough, I now work in a college like that. The higher ups have already indicated to me the tremendous blindspots located in their right half of their brains -- in some unfortunate cases, the left as well.

Gonna be a helluva trip redesigning curriculum for the accreditation bullshit.

Heh, I *just* knocked down my aerial.

And the phone company's line blew down last year, and since I have cable phone they never replaced it.
