System Restore.

I can use between 0%(Which strangely enough still uses 200mb) and 12% for my system restore. I just stumbled on this the other day and it was set to 12% or 9 GB. Which seems like a ton of space. All I do is play games, surf the net, and store pictures.

I have never done a system restore before so is there any reason I should have it set to max? Is there anything I could be overlooking?

I've never used the system restore either. So no clue. I've always got my important stuff back up so if the PC gets into a state where it's messing up alot, I just reformat and reload rather than try to salvage windows.

I set my PCs and work PCs to 6%, and have 80-160GB drives. So at least 5GB saved for it.

Basically, it allows you to restore to a previous state if you install software, get a virus, or a bad OS patch. It only works on programs, so it doesn't restore files (like my documents, etc), just executables. I've only had to use it twice in my life, but it's easier than the alternatives.

So if the only thing I am concerned about are my pictures and saved games a system restore isn't going to help me anyway?

Ok, then I am going to turn it to the lowest settings.

Thanks.

I had to use it a few times. Twice when I gor virused it worked great. Once when I was trying to restore some files it wasn't there for me. It isn't a true "restore system to previous date," but it mostly is.

It has its pros and cons like anything. While, I've heard great things about it, I've also heard an equal amount of stories where it didn't help. I also know there is a problem with it that can affect system performance.

Truthfully, if you fear losing data, you should:
1. Save all of your system CDs.
2. Buy an external hard drive and run backups to it of your critical files and system state. Run the backup weekly.
