My comment was making a joke, not a defense. I thought it was pretty obvious. My bad.
This is where I have been for a long time.
AFAIK, I'm the only person here who has voted in the presidential elections, but not for a R or D in at least the last four? My ballots are routinely all third party votes. Not because I believe in any of their messages, but because the two party system needs to be shaken up. I'm not looking for a revolution, just a message to be delivered. Perhaps if a third party became a threat we'd see more accountability?
Until then, enjoy insider trading, political dog and pony shows, the Epstein client list never seeing the light of day, and so on.

They are not real emergencies. It's supposed to be stuff like war. Not "I don't like have a trade deficit." Congress controls these powers, not the executive. (90% rule)

I started typing "of course", but I got to thinking about it.
Answer this for me: IF it could be shown that the degrading social fabric of the country could be traced directly to the offshoring of jobs, which are related to the whole tariff discussion, could one make an argument that there is an "emergency"?
And don't link this to Trump, if this is reality or not, or anything else "real". I'm just interested in this question in a vacuum, like a classroom exercise. Also, this isn't a setup for another point. I'm just curious. I think it would constitute an emergency, BUT I also think it would have to be proven so that emergency powers could be used.
Sort of related, so I'll put it here and not in the SCOTUS thread:
People truly are fed up with activist judges, judges clearly ruling along party lines, and judges ruling for their own self-interests. NOT saying these judges are wrong on this case!!!! Just saying that the credibility of the courts are at an all time low. We are not on a good path, and neither party is doing shit about it except working for themselves.According to a recent Gallup poll, Americans' confidence in the judicial system has dropped to a record low of 35%. This marks a 24-point decline over the last four years. The drop in trust spans across political lines, with confidence among those who disapprove of the country's leadership falling by 17 points, while those who approve saw an 18-point decline between 2023 and 2024.

No. An emergency has to be, imo, a near-term event that just occurred, like war, natural disasters, etc. Nothing about the trade deficits are a national emergency. Even China, who we should be acting more against, isn't a crisis, overall. It needs to be exigent.
Offshoring of jobs can be solved with legislation. It's been happening for decades. It's not urgent.
Republicans have attacked every institution as un-American, regardless of how American it is. I would say that judges rule along philosophical lines, not political lines, though that may be a distinction without a difference.

https://www.wsj.com/us-news/education/h ... _permalinkThe White House has an expanding list of complaints about Harvard. Among them: a puzzling claim that Harvard kids can’t do math.
“Did you see that, where the students can’t add two and two and they go to Harvard?” President Trump said on May 23 during an Oval Office briefing.
It isn’t just Trump. The rumor that Harvard’s admission standards have slipped so far they are teaching “remedial math” has ricocheted across social media to Washington. Two federal agencies, in official correspondence, have echoed it, one even suggesting Harvard is teaching “middle school math.”
Something doesn’t compute.
Harvard’s lowest math course is college-level calculus, and their students? Overall, they are something of arithmetic aficionados. Most undergraduates have taken four years of high-school math. The median math SAT score for incoming Harvard students has been 750 or higher over the past decade, in at least the 95th percentile for students nationwide.
“The narrative…it just is so disconnected from what’s happening in the classroom,” said Brendan Kelly, Harvard’s director of introductory math.
Why is our government so stupid?

I feel the same way but I don't think it goes far enough. A threatening third party would draw concessions from the entrenched powers... but concessions are temporary. Even the biggest concession from power in U.S. history, the New Deal, started being rolled back as soon as the pressure ended, and now, a century later, it's almost gone. The most recent national-scale protests, the George Floyd marches during the early pandemic, extracted nothing from power but promises and a quiet resolve to get people back to work and distracted from politics again as quickly as possible.Leisher wrote: ↑Tue May 27, 2025 10:28 am This is where I have been for a long time.

Correct. That's how Trump won re-election.

The car thing is a big old pile of horseshit. If climate change is such a huge threat to our existence, maybe taking a year off from making a completely unnecessary new model of every fucking car in existence is a good thing? P.S. Cars aren't selling anyway.
