I heard someone say the other day that back in the day, Henry Ford tried to take his excess profits and give his workers raises, but then a rival car company sued him by saying that wouldn't be good for stockholders, and he is required to do what's in the best interest for stock holders.

Basically, companies exist for the benefit of the shareholders. But management still largely has wide discretion in deciding what that means.
Companies can organize as different types of corporations if they do not want to do this.

Boycotts started and their stock dropped quickly. Within three weeks, Tractor Supply put out this tweet completely reversing direction. Corps can do what they want, but it is nice when they listen to their customers.
