Interesting. Maybe it's time to give 'em another shot.
Although one other question: is it possible to build a Mac out of spare parts? I prefer to make my own systems. It's much cheaper to upgrade later that way.

Ah, now you've stumbled upon the reason Mac never took off the same way the PC did. It's a closed system. Because of this they can only use a small subset of the hardware available. In spite of Apple switching to Intel processors, I haven't heard of anyone who's running OS X on a PC platform.

I know people have run OS X on a PC platform. That being said, I have no idea how long it lasted, if Apple eventually thwarted the efforts, etc.
This year, for the first time ever, I actually looked at a Mac as a possible computer for my wife, and then later for myself. The problem we had was not enough variety. The didn't have a powerful enough small one for the wife (12 or 13" with discrete graphics), and they didn't quite have a powerful enough large one for me (17" w/ RAID 1).
My boss is a Mac-fiend. He has the Santa Rosa Mac Book Pro, and it's very nice, with a great screen and does all that Unixy stuff DC mentioned. (He can code, and runs MySQL on it, etc).
