Anyone have any experience with these? Looking for something that could withstand the beach. Range not very important, 1 mile is fine.

I carried one of these around, from time to time.

I've used two different sets up at our lake. I won't be back up there until next weekend, but I can get a model number then or did you have any specific questions?

Just wondering if there was any features/brands/whatever that were nice.

I know nothing about them.

If I had wanted a cellphone, I would have made that the title.

I'd assume they're all about the same. Honestly, I think the technology has evolved enough that a small cheap set will satisfy most of your needs.

Mine are cheap, small, have belt clips, are rubberized (but not water proof), and claim to work 2 miles.
However, they don't broadcast through big hills. So if I'm AVT'ing a quarter mile away I'll only get the signal if I'm not in a valley.

Oh, and mine has rings. That is, I can push a button and make the other one ring. It's sort of handy, in that my wife doesn't have to say, "Hello? Hello? Are you there? Hello?" She can just push the tone button every few minutes and wait for me to radio her back.

If you only want a one-mile range, you should be able to get some cheap waterproof walky-talkies at a sporting goods store (or maybe Wal-Mart?). No features to speak of, but they'll likely do the job for a very low price. The more "professional" models (i.e. 2.4GHz band) will have nifty features and a range of 10 to 30 miles or so, but the cost goes up.
