So going back to my no-sleep slightly-manic times, I remember watching the Canadian Air Force on flight trackers be some of the first to react to the Ukrainian crisis. Don't underestimate our northern brothers.

That, and the logistics of a man made bridge up there that is defendable from hostile forces and able to withstand the weather is not likely.

Oh, I'm not. I'm just saying that's the only way China can get enough troops on this continent to be effective. Any other means of transport would be too slow. No other way to move billions of troops quickly, other than on land, and really, on foot. It would take them months to make the trip, but billions of troops would overwhelm Canada, and then us.

But in reality, having a billion troops is pretty pointless. The returns diminish pretty heavily at. . .some number way below a billion.

I wonder sometimes if China really is the threat we say they are.

Talk about economically linked - they love Western money. Look what they are doing with it! Bringing up a huge middle class, tons of infrastructure projects, are very consistent in their position that they are not big fans of war.
We should be so lucky.

All their humans rights abuses, ghost fishing fleets, and other state-level actions are BAD BAD BAD. But none of that screams "INVADING THE WESTERN WORLD"

It's more just... China First. Which was an ok thing to say in the USA until it also meant Pro-Putin.

1. If China decided to invade the USA on foot, 3 nukes, 100 miles up, spaced just right shuts down the entire country via EMP. Three months later, after 200 million are dead, China moves in 10 million troops to California all casually in the guise of humanitarian aid.

2. If everyone is afraid to move on Putin because he has nukes, then Putin dropping on nuke on Kiev and then immediately withdrawing is probably a safe move if everyone is timid. After all, Hitler did one atrocity after another before anyone would move on him.

3. The biggest army in Europe is the USA. This is not great now that we need them and they've been huddling under our umbrella for decades.

4. KIEV.

1. You guys keep telling me how. Not why. Why the fuck would they want to do these things?

2. I hate discussing this one - it's the only one I really, really don't like speculating about. Footage of children walking alone to the Polish border is heart breaking enough.

3. How about "size of force a country is willing to commit to Europe"?
Russia, followed by Ukraine, then a big drop off, then the USA, not sure after that. Poland?

4. The people holding the city get to pick the name. If the invaders win they can name it what they want.

1. Now, they wouldn't. They have a much easier, weaker, easier-to-invade target just to their north, now, that has a joke of a military. Hell...... right this second, China would probably be hailed if they drove tanks toward Moscow.

4. Also, Burma, and Constantinople.

Ha - I was just watching blood diamond before the war kicked off and Leo’s character calls all these African countries by their colonial names the whole time.

I'm of the opinion that if you're wounded because someone said the name of your country wrong, then you have an exploitable weakness.

Catt, if Russia defaults on their sovereign debt in the next few weeks - do I get my $100 or do we have to wait until they go all “Lord of the Flies” on us?

Deleted. Thank god. I made a number of sleep deprived statements/predictions I regretted.

It was something about Russia collapsing. Which is pretty vague.

I would argue default does not constitute collapse. Lord of the Flies is certainly collapse, but the line is probably short of that.

It occurs to me that if China, today, invaded russia with the intent of "toppling the evil regime," the USA and the west would look at that and go, "huh..." and wonder if we should intervene at all.

China's a long way from the parts of Russia that matter. But, I mean, we wouldn't want China to take over more assets, but we also hate Russia, so...

Letting China have adventures to their north keeps them busy for 20 years and keeps their gaze off the south China sea.
