Nah, going with the RAM upgrayyed, 2x8GB sticks are on the way.
I have no memory of loading this thing initially, but looking at this thread it was a fucking pain. I would have to figure it out all over again. I'd love to have a SSD for the C:, but.... maybe not that bad.

Just clone the drive onto the SSD, that's eays.
It's not me, it's someone else.

I've never cloned a drive successfully.....................................
But that intrigues me. Maybe that'll be the next thing I try, if RAM doesn't help.

Da fuq?
I dunno, I guess I haven't done it a ton of times, but it's always worked.

Last time I tried was.... maybe 2002.

I installed 2 8GB sticks. Windows System properties says "16.0 GB (8.00 GB Usable)."
There are 4 RAM slots, 2 blue, 2 gray. They are paired, Blue Gray, then Blue Gray.
First I installed the sticks into 2 blue slots, in different sections. Got that message.
Then I installed them 1 in a blue and 1 in a gray, in a single section. Same message.
What am I missing.

A better operating system? Some version of Windows could only support 'X' amount of RAM regardless of how much you put in. If it's being recognized by the system, but not used, it's not a hardware issue, in my experience.

Oh, older motherboards would partition RAM off to use for graphics, but 8GB seems excessive.

You answered while I was writing this post. Sofake edit - WIndows Home Server 2011. I was about to argue with you and I Googled it.... at it says 8GB max. Goddammit. WTF.
The hardware itself can take up to 32GB. Never occurred to me WinHS had an 8GB limitation.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Got out the flashlight and took a harder look at the mobo. Better info:
DIMM 1&3 blue
DIMM 2&4 green
Initially, did 2&4. 16 installed, 8 usable. relatively shorter boot time
Then, 1&2. 16 installed 8 usable, longer boot time.
Right this second I am trying 1&3. WIll see how it goes.
Googling suggests I may have a ton reserved for system video.

Also, go both blue, or both gray. Best to find the manual and figure out which to fill first. You should be able to find a model number on the motherboard that will lead you to the manual. This affects performance, not usability by the OS. I was posting this while you were posting yours.

but, the server is running a lot better now. When I hit MY Plex server from various devices, on the LAN and even over the phone when across town, my music library now actually loads. It used to just hang with the "Thinking about it" circle 5 times out of 6.
Also closed the "PS3 Media Server" service, to free up those few K of memory. I was using it to stream my media here and there.... on a PS3 or even Roku Media Player, the "PS3 Media Server" would always show up in the list of available servers and I could stream from the libraries I had set. That was also super flakey and slow, due to the memory bottleneck. But now with Plex I guess the PS3MS is obsolete.

When I open File Explorer from elsewhere on the LAN, the music files and stuff now come up instantly. So nice! Even 8GB RAM is a huge diff over 4.
