Dota Underlords

I don't know if any of you have seen the recent rise of the "auto chess" games that have been coming out, but i wanted to see what it was all about and decided to check this one.

Right now there's Dota Underlords, which is a game spin off from Valve's Dota 2 and League of Legends Teamfight Tactics that are the big ones. Obviously both come from the MOBA genre and use the same characters from their games. Dota's is actually in open beta for free on Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/1046 ... nderlords/ and League's TFT can only be played on the beta server but is supposed to release into the regular game client very shortly.

Its a simple yet deep fight simulation. You pick your team to fight for you as you build your roster up you try and combine teammates that combo well together. Each round you place your guys on the chess board wherever you like and then they automatically go fight till someone wins. There is actually alot of strategy at play here, you can spend your gold and upgrade your fighters early or sit back and save up some gold for a better late game team. RNG is a big factor in this game but if your good you can play off of this and still do really well, i think of it like poker. Someone may get some really good cards and there's nothing you can do about that, but if you play smart you can overcome this in the long run.

you can play vs AI or PVP. in PVP the game sets you up with 7 others players and you fight a different one in each round. Slowly dropping each others HP until your to zero. I found if your doing bad the game will be done in 15 mins, but if your one of the last two standing it can be almost 40 mins. There is a ranking mode in DOTA's version, i played it for like 10 hours on Saturday and got to upper tier 3.

I've never played DOTA so there was a learning curve for me in what characters do what. I'm really looking forward to trying out the LOL TFT game when its available.

I never would have given this the time of day without this review.

Let me know when the LoL one comes out. I'll give it a try with you as long as it doesn't become a second job.

This game isn't really a co-op game at all. You just que up and you're playing solo matches against the 7 other players in the same game. I've read the DOTA version will soon allow you to set up lobbies so you can que into games with your friends, but you would be playing against each other in the end.

Its not a second job at all, you can even play the Underlords on mobile which is weird because i don't usually like mobile games at all. I just happened to put in tons of hours on it over the weekend cause i was having so much fun with it.

Looks like TFT is releasing today in NA. That means you would have to log into the League client to play this Leisher, are you certain you would even want to do that??

Dota Underlords

i got to play one game of LOL's TFT mode last night, finished in 3rd. There are things i like and dislike about Valve's and Riot's take on the auto chess genre, but i think i will like the Riot version better just because i know and like the League champs better than Dota.

Underlords UI is little bit messy compared to TFT and when your in the shop when a fight is going on (which i do alot) it covers up the action of whats going on. Whereas TFT has it open all the time at the bottom of the screen and doesn't block any of the action.

Underlords does better with seeing what units you have on board that have been upgraded with the number of stars above them, TFT you have to click on the unit or just notice that he is a little bit bigger to see what level he is.

TFT does items a little different in the fact that you can go rounds without getting any at all, this can make for some really lopsided games if RNG just hates you this needs to be fixed. Where Underlords you know what rounds you will get the items and everybody will be getting them too, you just dont know what you will get. But i do like the TFT forces you to be smart on who you put them on, because you can't freely move them around like in Underlords, so it adds a level of strategery.

I'll probably be on playing some more tonight to see what one i really like better, but i'm betting TFT is superior once they get ranked mode rolled out and do some more updates.
