What does is that the taboo holds power over you. The act of satire, even as base as this ad, necessitates that you cannot think of the subject as a sacred cow or something else to be worshiped. It also means your psyche isn't completely at the mercy of something when confronted with it. It means you have achieved a degree of control and disassociation.

Miracle Mattress apologized on Thursday after it received a fury of backlash on social media over the promotion. In the 20-second clip, three employees try to drum up business with a one-day sale by offering any size mattress for the price of a twin-sized one.

“What better way to remember 9/11 then with a Twin Tower sale?” a woman says moments before two men fall over backwards and send two towers of mattresses tumbling to the ground. One of the mattress towers adorns a small American flag.

“We’ll never forget,” the woman says at the end of the commercial.

Could that have been done a bit better? Sure. But if you're going with a level of tastelessness usually only approached by John Watters, own that shit.

Mike Bonanno, who owns Miracle Mattress, said in a separate statement that he would hold his employees “accountable” for the “serious lapse of decency.” “I say this unequivocally, with sincere regret: The video is tasteless and an affront to the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11.”

I think it's a matter of opinion on whether or not shutting it down was rational.

Personally, I think it was the smart move. The story is now dead. He's not in the headlines trying to defend a commercial made in poor taste. Even if you think the commercial was funny, you still should have enough common sense to think, "Maybe this will rub some people the wrong way..." That made it bad business.

Having the business shuttered takes all the power away from the SJWs. Now they have no target. They won! In a year or two, preferably away from September 11th, he can reopen the business with a new name. And then they can make their Bill Cosby commercial.

Indefinitely shutting down the business (and presumably laying off all employees in the process) is a pretty big step to take. If it's really indefinite that would probably also include ending any contracts on the retail space as well as disposing of inventory. With the only thing left being a tarnished name, the business won't be coming back.

According to a brand new report from THR, it seems that California Governor Jerry Brown has officially signed a law into effect that requires entertainment websites like IMDB to remove an actor's age from a profile upon request. If the site has not yet published the age, then the request could also serve to keep them from doing so in the first place. The intention of this legislation is to protect actors against widespread age discrimination, which -- while already illegal in all industries -- has become a widespread issue in Hollywood.

Although this may seem like a fairly trivial matter on the surface, there's actually some fairly poignant rationale for putting this legislation into effect. The persistence of ageism in the Hollywood casting process has become a fairly high profile phenomenon in recent years, and this law hopes to take specific steps towards combating the practice. The issue reached a fever pitch last year when Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed that, at 37-years-old, she was considered "too old" to portray the love interest of a 55-year-old male actor. Ageism takes the meritocracy out of Hollywood, and creates an unfair advantage for someone simply because they're younger.

I don't think "too old" was the problem. "Too fugly" perhaps. She's what we used to call a "two-bottle woman" because it generally took a couple 750s of hard liquor before your vision got blurry enough to consider her fuckable.

It's hard to deny that there definitely seems to be a double standard in Hollywood when it comes to the ages of men and women. While men like Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, and Daniel Craig, get to play action heroes and sex symbols well into their 40s, actresses are generally given much shorter shelf lives, and find themselves in far more difficult situations when it comes to casting.

I'd kill for some demographic stats on the genders of each of those dudes. Is this some kind of roundabout accusation that the male-dominated movie industry is pushing old dudes into their films to please the ... male audience members, I assume ... and immediately pulling a Logan's Run on any woman over the age of, what 35, 40? Does anyone stop to consider it's mainly the women fueling the box office numbers from those three? Hell, no. That would require chaining two thoughts together.
