Silicon Valley

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

HBO series. 8 episodes in season 1.

This show sets up Silicon Valley to be like Hollywood. Unemployed, or more appropriately, unfunded programmers and app developers are everywhere. Everyone is trying to make the next app or breakthrough that will make them rich.

Silicon Valley follows one particular household where one of the residents discovers a new means of compression, which immediately makes him and his housemates players in the tech business.

The show is a comedy that's sort of played like a drama. The biggest name in the show is T.J. Miller, a stand up comedian who does a lot of commercials and I remember him from an episode of The League. The current AT&T spokeswoman also shows up during an episode. (Have we talked about her yet? She's fucking hot.) Everyone else seems vaguely familiar, but I'm too lazy to look them up.

It's a solid show that should appeal to this crowd because there are a lot of IT jokes. Some of it laughs with us, some of it laughs at us.

I do want to point out that in the final episode there is a...concept...that some of the characters try to work out, and it's honestly one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.

Not the funniest show ever created, but definitely above average, and should be seen by the audience at this forum.

Episode 8 of season 1 was awesome (kinda a continuation from episode 7).

I started season 2, wondering were a certain character was. Turned out he died IRL.

Is season 2 worth it? I've heard mixed feelings.

I don't recall season 2 but I watched it. I must have liked it because I still collected season 3 (although I haven't watched it yet).

Yeah, the "concept" they were working at the end of S1 was.hilarious.

Found myself chuckling frequently, and even laughing at least once each episode. Thumbs up.

About 4 eps into S2, on HBO Go.

In S4.

This show can be hard to watch, sometimes. Their wins are nice, but at this point you know it is going to last no more than 2 episodes before they shoot themselves in the dick again, or some billionaire is going to fuck them over.

But it's fun, season to season, to see the "Sim City" version of the Silicon Valley opening scene change, as tech companies come and go. "Alphabet" appeared over the Google building. "Soylent" is now a food truck in the corner. Two hot air balloons appeared bumping into each other, one labeled "Uber," the other "Lyft." They're paying attention.

When Jarek Duda invented an important new compression technique called asymmetric numeral systems (ANS) a few years ago, he wanted to make sure it would be available for anyone to use. So instead of seeking patents on the technique, he dedicated it to the public domain. Since 2014, Facebook, Apple, and Google have all created software based on Duda's breakthrough.

But now Google is seeking a patent that would give it broad rights over the use of ANS for video compression. And Duda, a computer scientist at Jagiellonian University in Poland, isn't happy about it.
Wonder if he knows how long it would take to jack off every guy in the room?

Looks like Oracle put a climbing wall on their roof.

And did Uber get mad at them? Now the Lyft balloon is bumping up against another balloon with some logo on it I don't recognize.

Also I wonder who that was the FBI cars were raiding. The text on the building was too small to read.

Tesla delivery trucks showed up in the season 5 credits.

All done. The way they ended it, looked like it could have been the series finale, but I just read the next season has been approved.

Wow, I was only catching about 25% of the references.

That was as-of season 4.

In season 5, the "Facebook" sign was rewritten in russian-looking, cyrillic-style letters, referencing the "russians posting fake news" shit.
