That'd be a fun little social experiment.

Who is more likely to kill: a religious person or an atheist?
The flip side would be "Who's more likely to sacrifice their life to save another?"

I suspect the answer to both questions is that it doesn't make much difference. The odds don't change, just the motivations.

No way to know without lots of massive data mining, though.

I joined the Marines, voluntarily. I can't imagine, when it's time to throw yourself on a grenade in order to save your buddies, any type of thought process beforehand where one asks, "Does Jesus want me to jump on this grenade?" You either have that quality of love and self sacrifice in you, or you don't.

I read a pithy little quip the other day, that even though it is a bit limited and general, it has stuck in my head:

"In a world without religion, good people will do good things and evil people will do evil things. It takes the influence of religion to make good people do evil things..."

Like strap a bomb onto themselves and get on a bus.

I don't disagree with you Gordo. Just making a counter point. What were those three things that Marines have a duty to again? :;):

Drinking, fucking, and fighting? ;)

I know what you're getting at, but the "God-thing" was no longer pushed when I was in in the early 90's the way it was portrayed in Full Metal Jacket.

In fact, my first Sunday in boot camp just happened to be Easter. They held protestant services and Catholic mass.... to ensure there were plenty of bodies for each, the DI went down the line pointing at us saying, "You're Catholic, you're protestant, you're Catholic, you're protestant," etc. Just alternated.

And I know for a fact we had at least one Jew in the platoon.
