Those who point at the perpetual logjam of new releases feel that Valve has abandoned any semblance of quality control. They fear that Steam will become like the App Store, known more for what it rejects than what it showcases. And they have a point: who wants lazy mobile game ports, halfheartedly erotic pinball, soccer-fighting games, something called SpaceCorn, or Gynophobia, “a horror shooter about abnormal fear of women,” on Steam? How can deserving, independent gems to stand out in an ecosystem filled with junk?

By not sucking. For every decent game made, you figure at least 10 shitty ones are made.

Consider this prescient quote from 1986 by Hiroshi Yamauchi, Nintendo’s president: “Atari collapsed because they gave too much freedom to third-party developers and the market was swamped with rubbish games.”

It ain't '86 no more. If your game is ass, the internet will kill you in a week, tops. I won't even talk about comparing the hardware back then with what we've got now, but it's about a thousand times better.

Yeah! I know what you mean. I miss the days when there were three television channels to choose from, and we liked it that way! Having choices is for hippies!
You understand I was simply linking an article, yes?

I don't think there are too many games on Steam. I DO think Steam should be stricter about what games get put on Steam, and possibly change the way they do Early Access games.

I think they should have a "shitty games i'm never going to play" category. And populate accordingly. I don't care how.

Oh. When you inverted the intention of the article's title I thought you were making a statement. If you had linked it with the original title I wouldn't have taken it that way.

No statement. I actually used the same headline PC Gamer did for the article.

Thus my mistaken assumption. My apologies.

Nothing to apologize for as I never took any sort of offense. I was just confused about your interpretation of my link text.

Valve made a lot of money last year.

Great! How about spending some of that money to develop Half-Life 2 Episode 3?

3P tool for moving Steam files from one location to another. Going to test it.

Steam already nags me to verify my email address like once a month, and I can't get rid of the nag notification until I do. Now they are doing the same thing trying to get my cell phone number, which I am never, ever going to enter? That's annoying.

Steam never asks me for my email.

As for the cell thing, what are you worried about? Telemarketers?

Sure.

And I have already seen all the arguments for "don't worry about it just give them your phone number."

But I don't want to and I don't think I should be nagged about it every day.

We have 3 accounts in the house and we get the "verify your email" message frequently.

I get some weird thing about verifying who I am, or logging in as if I've never used a computer before periodically.
It's not me, it's someone else.

Stealing Steam accounts has become a thing, like stealing email accounts and whatnot. (That happened to me once, but I stole it back. The guy forgot to change the security question and answer.)

So I don't mind Steam checking to see if its me when I log in from a new PC.

My cell is an identifier for me in a couple sites, and to date, no telemarketing calls.

I try to keep my online footprint as small as possible... to my knowledge NO online service has my phone number (Facebook also asks for it frequently), but in this post-google world, it may be a moot point.

I bet google already knows my number because of the Andoid OS.

What's going to get difficult is that cell phone numbers are going to get more and more fluid.

There's got to be an opportunity for an app to help people manage ALL of their social media and email accounts. Manage, post, do security settings, etch.

One app to rule them all!

But yeah, I respect trying to maintain some privacy, but I consider my cell number used by (somewhat) trusted vendors in a "security" capacity to be ok.

I've only regretted giving out the number once. Fucking Red Cross...

I automatically punch numbers not in my contact list to voicemail.

And if there was a phone app to enable you to have a blacklist for incoming numbers that coulnd't be spoofed, I'd have less of a problem with it. I know the tech exists but no company in the chain of voice-providing would want to eliminate a revenue stream of selling blocks of phone numbers to their "partners."

You're saying they'll guess the number of someone on my contact list and I'll be forced to hang up on them?
