I don't think this is related to the mentos thing. That's about nucleation - which is fundamentally a mechanical process - but given the violence of the reaction I'd guess this is probably a chemical reaction of some sort. Interesting.

I vote chem as well. He put in a lot of explodey things with something that's expandy and trapped it so it's got no way to go but up. I assume the trick is not agitating it before you want to launch.
