I should probably system restore to yesterday, and shut off automatic updates.
Not a bad idea. I update WinBlows regularly & it hasn't given me shit yet.

Oh yeah.

I turned on Automatic Updates the other day, as peeps said they were still getting their updates that way.

Apparently it "upgraded" my WGA so now I get the "you aren't genuine, you fucking fake" messages. I wasn't getting them before.

So, Linux.... how good is the WinXP emulation through WINE?
You can turn off those messages, you posted the link yourself, iirc.

And I have automatic updates set to "automatically download" and I choose when/what to install.

I have it set to also let me choose what to download as well. That way I have to screw up twice in a row to accidently install something I shouldn't.

Windows Genuine Advantage removal tool.

For what it's worth.

So... do you suppose hackers are going to write a spoof WGA in order to keep Microsoft from shutting people down?
AHA.

It worked. Removed the icon from my system tray, and even scrubbed it out of the registry.

Another reason to hate Vista.

2 computers lifetime max per consumer copy, then buy another.

Ooops, we're changing our minds

I've already told people in the company not to expect to see Vista until 2008. (Although, I'll have a test machine in my office running it in January.)

I'm going to keep an eye on what DX10 does for games, and MAYBE buy a single license for home use.

Well hell, if you want a machine w\ an OS built on some alien philosophy, you could just get a Mac.

That retraction just brought me back from the verge of converting to Linux.

Microsoft shut them down.

Does anyone have a backup, or know an alternative?

Although I have several valid copies of Windows XP, I hate the whole validation thing on principle.

As such, I sometimes find that Microsoft won't let me download Windows add-ons, since I won't install their validator.

Fortunately, sites like Softpedia.com have links to external mirrors that have the same software. No validation required.

Word on the street is that some(n)one has released an OEM crack-integrated Vista to the Internets. Vista Ultimate. It may work, or it may be a waste of your time.

I'm going to unpin this one, as well. Mostly a bunch of stuff about XP and how to run a non-verified copy of it.

We almost need a general "Microsoft has no fucking idea what they want to do" thread.

How MS will "beat" Google.
