The random number generator was kind on a morning run of Coastal City this morning - I got an M4.
Pistoled some bears on my way out and then spotted the only other dude on the server investigating the shots. I opted to get the M4 back and learn it, but wanted to take him down. He was clearly hunting me.

Ya. That's a popular way to scale buildings now. More popular than stairs. You can build, and jump through, barricades on pillars. Some people call it an exploit. Some people call it creative. Devs recently removed the ability to place barricades on top of barricades. So then they discovered that pillars injected into the structure allowed it to still work. I'm guessing this will be addressed someday. But probably not any time soon. The only security that I've found to be sound is depth. Not height. Almost worth building a 1 story structure as wide and long as you can. All ceilings. Make doors all the way to the center.
But even more effective, in my opinion, is still the idea of multiple small hideouts scattered all over the place. Minimize losses.

Also, one quick note: Be cautious about what you say in chat even if our group is the only ones on.

He's bugged out of a server, hasn't been able to log in for 2 days now. We're trying to unbug it.
Edit: The PVP server reset this morning to remove durability... I didn't find it too bad. Should have fixed the issue?

I think durability is a bit out of whack at the moment. They've got to tweak the numbers. I shouldn't break a pickax after using it a single day. On top of that, I think the overall health takes way too much of it whenever you repair something.

I agree with Troy. Durability is a big deal is terms of long term fighting. It adds the element that I talk about elsewhere when discussing the game with Cake. It makes a war of attrition more possible.
I just think they're going to need to tweak it some.
I'd actually favor leaving guns where they are, and adjusting the durability for tools.
