Anyone else listen to podcasts? I'm looking for some new ones to add to my normal rotation, and I hope someone here has some suggestions.

Over the past two plus years, I've listened to ESPN podcasts, most of the SModcast network (most are in front of live audiences), tried out PCGamer's podcast, The Watchtower (not religion), and I just discovered the Monday Morning Podcast.

If you know of any good ones, please share...

The ones I've listened to:
ESPN Podcasts - I've only listened during football season, and it's usually the previous night's TV or radio shows that I didn't catch. Oh, and the occasional fantasy football show. Outside of football season I never listen to ESPN podcasts.

PCGamer - Pretty self-explanatory.

The Watchtower - Geek podcast that mainly focuses on comics and comic related movies, but does some video games too. The comics stuff is mostly on the business end, but they do small bits on story lines. I'd recommend this for fellow nerds, particularly if you just want to keep up on what's going on in that world.

Monday Morning Podcast - Stand up comedian Bill Burr's weekly podcast. Hilarious. Bill Burr is one of the funniest guys around right now.

Smodcast - Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier talking about various subjects. The grandaddy of the SModcast network. Interesting and funny, but with so many episodes in the bag, they definitely have some "misses". Lots of insider jokes at this point too, but nothing so involved that a new listener can't catch up.

Hollywood Babble On (SM network) - Ralph Garman and Kevin Smith (or Jon Lovitz or Bill Burr or some other random co-host) review the week's Hollywood news. Ralph does lots of impressions, which is a lot funnier than normal because everything is very adult. Weekly bits include mailbag, deaths, box office, geek news, how big is Liam Neeson's cock, etc. Hilarious podcast. Highly recommend it for movie fans with a love of adult humor.

Blow Hard (SM network)- Malcolm Ingram and various co-hosts discuss gay stuff. When this started it was very interesting because it was like learning about this whole other culture. Many episodes in, it's become kinda dull. The most interesting continuing story is Malcolm's efforts to make a porno. Malcolm is known for his lack of a filter, which used to lead him to bashing many celebs publicly. Odd for someone in the Hollywood culture (he's a director). But that stuff has slowed down. Lately he's had a string on no name guest hosts, and I think it's skewing into an area where it's a bit too self-serving to Malcolm and holds little interest to the audience. Marja Lewis is the most common guest host, and she's worth listening to if you're into lesbians who are very open about their lifestyle. In fact, she would make for a very interesting debate topic as her current girlfriend is someone who was straight, but Marja worked on her for years, and finally got her to "turn". How this could play out in common arguments about the gay lifestyle is pretty obvious.

Having Sex with Katie Morgan (SM network)- There has only been 2-3 episodes of this, but they've been interesting. Katie is a porn star who appeared in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and also married one of Kevin's friends. She discusses sex, the business, and answers some questions from listeners.

The ABCs of SNL - Jon Lovitz talks in detail about his career. Pretty interesting, and Lovitz is a lot funnier than you might think. This is not a weekly podcast. There's only been two episodes, one of which I'm downloading now, so I don't know if there's more. Considering the SM network mostly records live in the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, I'm going to guess that yes, there will be more.

I listen to about 40 different podcasts. I'll have to go down the list of the ones I'd recommend when I get home tonight.

Here's my top suggestions, in alphabetical order. The links are the direct links to the RSS feeds:

Scientific American's 60 Second Science - one minute episodes on current science in the news, every weekday. Lots of interesting tidbits you may or may not have heard of already, but probably not. A nice change of pace when they come up in between other longer podcasts.

Helen & Olly's Answer Me This - half-hour weekly podcast with two Brits answering questions sent in by the audience. Almost always completely hilarious, and usually quite British.

How Stuff Works' Brainstuff - two- to three-minutes, three times a week, with a brief discussion of a topic about some technology or science. Kind of like if How It's Made was a podcast ... and not about making things per se. Another nice cast to use as aperitifs.

Rooster Teeth's Drunk Tank - It's possible you'd need to be a Rooster Teeth fan to really enjoy this, but I'm not sure about that. I really really enjoy these. These guys are hilarious. Topics usually revolve around gaming, except when they don't and Gus starts getting pissed off or Joel starts babbling about finance. Or Geoff gets too drunk. Whatever. Good stuff. About an hour each week.

Toady One's Dwarf Fortress Talk - Really it's only worth it if you like Dwarf Fortress and want to hear them babble about what's up with that. But enjoyable if that's true. Irregularly updated.

NPR's How to Do Everything - This is not an NPR show. Two guys who work on NPR do this themselves. About 15 minutes a week on a wide variety of topics, often with a guest expert. They're fun to listen to, and almost always very interesting.

SMODCAST's Jay and Silent Bob Get Old - Weekly, extremely crude, and pretty much what you would expect to hear from Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. Mostly about Jay. Interesting stuff if you like these guys. It frequently ends these days with some visual stuff that isn't worth listening to, but the first hour is usually good.

Loading Ready Run's LRRCast - These are the Canadians behind Desert Bus for Hope, Checkpoint, Unskippable, and etc. You really need to be fans of theirs to get the most out of this one. But then if you aren't a fan of theirs it must be because you haven't watched their stuff and what is wrong with you? Go watch LRR already. Jeez.

NPR's Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me - The only show on NPR I listen to, in podcast form for maximum convenience. This shit is awesomely funny. Sure, they're a bunch of liberal hippies (except Tom Bodett), but if I had to pick just one podcast this would be IT. It's also hella fun to play along. That is when I'm not laughing so hard I'm struggling to keep the car on the road.

The Onion's Onion Radio News - Another five times a week one minute podcast to slip between the big ones. It's just what you'd expect from The Onion; mildly amusing and totally fabricated "news".

SMODCAST's Plus One - Kevin and Jen doing their podcast. Also vulgar, and also funny. It's interesting to see the dynamic they have. I think a lot of what Kevin does is driven by Jen's dynamic behind the scenes. Probably my favorite of the SMODCASTs.

The Stranger's Savage Love Podcast - Dan Savage answers listener questions about sex and ... well, more sex. Not all of it is gay. Often funny, sometimes a bit much, but usually worth listening to. This show is the reason you can no longer safely google Santorum.

Brian Dunning's Skeptoid - About 15 minutes each week discussing some weird supernatural topic or new age crap, and explaining not only why it's crap but where it came from and how it came to be popular. Nicely written, usually tame but enjoyable.

How Stuff Works' Stuff You Should Know - A half-hour each week about some topic or other, well researched and presented, and usually amusing. Very similar to How to do Everything, but if I had to pick one this one is better. Funnier, too.

Writing Excuses - Fifteen minutes long, because you're in a hurry and they aren't that smart. Howard Taylor (Schlock Mercenary) and two other guys I can never remember the names of (one of which took over Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time recently) talk about some writing topic each week. Funny and insightful. You don't have to be a writer to enjoy it.

This is just a few of the ones I listen to, the cream of the crop if you will. I have a lot more I could recommend. Also I have a lot I listen to only at work, where it's fine if I miss a big chunk of it because I get busy and tune it out. Most of those come from the TWiT network (Leo Laporte of the old Screen Savers show is doing just fine, has his own radio network and you can get it all online). For example:

This Week in Google - Discussion of the latest in the world of Google, and what it means to folks like you and I. There's similar shows for Apple, Windows, Security, Linux, etc etc etc. I think Leo does about 12 hours of radio a day.

This Week in Law - My second favorite right behind TWiG. Discusses the latest technology each week with a focus on the legal issues surrounding the topic. Always fun to hear them ripping Facebook a new one for their latest stupidity. :)

Really, anything on twit.tv is going to be pretty good.

Anyway, if you'd like more suggestions let me know. I've got so many I can't keep up. I'm 82 hours behind on podcasts right now, and that number goes up a few hours each week. *sigh* There's just too much good stuff out there these days.

On what device do y'all play podcasts.

I'm not even entirely certain what a podcast is, as the only thing I have ever listened to that were clled podcasts were battlestar galactica DVD director's commentary.

Or maybe it was Firefly.

Either way.

A podcast is basically a regularly published mp3 file pushed through an RSS feed on a schedule. Like radio, but what you decide to hear when you want to hear it, instead of whatever is on. Podcasts are to radio as utorrent RSS feeds of TV shows are to regular television. Sort of.

All you need is an mp3 player and podcast catching software (RSS grabber + transfers to your player + auto-deletion once listened to). I use an iPod Touch, but any mp3 player can do the job. The most common software used is iTunes, but I hate iTunes very very very much and quit using it years ago.

If you aren't already entrenched in a piece of mp3 management software, I strongly recommend Media Monkey. It's excellent at music management and has a nice podcast catcher built in. You do have to get the paid edition to do more complex auto-playlists, but if you get that far into it it will be well worth it by that point.

Oh, one other tip: if there's a podcast you want some episodes of but not others, try pushing the feed through this

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=Ppgh9GDt3BGA0kmYy6ky6g

For example, one other podcast I listen to is Dogma Free America, but I really only like the episodes with Jamye as the secondary host. So I push the feed through that Yahoo! Pipe with Jamye as a required word, and I only get those episodes I want. The rest never show up at all. Useful to help trim things down a bit if you can define what you want with keywords.

Sure, you could do that with autoplaylists in your podcast catcher, but it would still download and then dump the unwanted episodes. This avoids ever having them download in the first place.

I have an iPhone due to work, so I listen on there. The one positive that iTunes brings to the table is that you can subscribe to podcasts and they come down to your phone automatically.

When I carried a Dell MP3 player I'd have to go download all my podcasts manually.

Thanks TPR, a few suggestions in there I'm definitely going to try.

I'm starting to get a bit burnt out on Kevin Smith's crew, with the exceptions of the brilliant Hollywood Babble On and SModcast. When I originally thought about starting this thread I was going to post that I don't want anything serious because I get enough of that, however your suggestions on the 15-30 minute podcasts that cover science and such sound perfect.

Although, I'd still like to find something else along the lines of what Bill BUrr does. He is hilarious.

I know what you mean about Smith. I think the problem is the podcasts on the SMODCAST network are just too darn long. They're good, but good lord, man, save something for next week. TWiT.tv podcasts are all also very long, but they're worksafe so they get to fall into background noise at work very nicely. I couldn't do that with SMODCASTs.

That's why I have so many little short ones in my list. And I may be dumping some of the longer ones before too much longer. I can't keep up with all the ones I've subscribed to. But that still won't stop me for checking out Bill Burr.

I think Burr is one of the funniest stand up guys on the planet right now. His podcast is an hour of him talking about random things like sports, politics, conspiracy theories, etc. and he also gives advice. He's just a funny, laid back guy who you'll see as someone you could go grab a beer with, which isn't that common in stand up. Most stand up comics are very aloof or very disturbed. Bill seems like he could be in your click of friends and that translates well into his podcast. His girlfriend, Nia(?), has appeared a few times, and calls his podcast misogynistic because he busts women's chops a lot.

I wish Dave Attell had a podcast.

I was also thinking about trying to dig up the Minnesota comic that was on The Last Comic Standing back before stand up comics found out it was rigged. It had Ralph May (who got robbed out of the win), Mike Voss, and some other actual name comics. I can't remember the guy from Minnesota's name, but I think it was Dave. Anyway, maybe he has a podcast with Voss. They had a great chemistry.

Did you see that Jay Mohr just started a podcast on the SModcast network? I wasn't a massive fan of his back when he was first on the scene, but I think that might have been because he played a dick in every movie (for example: the other agent in Jerry Maguire). However, I've heard from multiple sources that he's a genuinely nice guy. He also happens to be the guy behind Last Comic Standing and quit it once it was revealed that NBC was cheating the votes.

I've got another one I can now recommend: http://feeds.feedburner.com/FreedomainRadioVolume5

They put out lots of them, apparently, but I've now listened to three episodes and liked what I heard. The three I heard were on economics and politics and they're very ... well, the things I was hearing would fit in well with the general tone of DTMan.com. Some interesting and insightful analysis in there. No comedy to speak of, though.

BS Report
Monday Morning Podcast
World Football Phone In

Although I save the Monday Morning Podcasts for when I have long drives ahead of me. Right now I am listen to the March 2009 shows.

Didn't know about the Lovitz one. Will be adding that to my list since he is my favorite SNL person.

I listen to just about all of the Adam Carolla podcasts.
He recently got into the Guinness Book of World Records for most downloaded podcast.

Updating my list, if you have great podcasts to recommend, please do so as well...

I'm still listening to Hollywood Babble On and the two Bill Burr podcasts regularly: The Monday Morning Podcast and The Monday Morning Just Before Friday Podcast (yes, it's on Thursdays). (Signing up for TMMP gets you both.)

Babble On is repetitive and usually 9-120 minutes, but entertaining enough.

For the MMP, the first 30 minutes is Bill riffing on whatever, then the last 30 is the best when he answers emails. The MMJBFP is only 30 minutes of him riffing. Bill's podcasts are the only ones where I listen to the ads. He makes them funny and the drama he has with advertisers for always going off script is hilarious. He's the only podcaster I'm aware of that has been fired by advertisers because he'll bash the shit out of their products if he doesn't believe in them. He also never just reads copy. He will ad his own stuff like jingles. So if you want to hear advertising with "fuck" and "cunt" in it...

The Adventure Zone is my newest "regular" podcast, and I'm been burning through them from Episode 1. (I'm on 30 right now.) It's a group of brothers and their dad playing D&D and it's hilarious. The DM has created this entire adventure for them, so all the material is unique. They do use D&D 5E rules though. My only complaint is that the DM coddles them too much. There have been moments when one or more of them absolutely should have died, but he didn't let that happen. The brother that plays Taako (Taco) is pretty hilarious. He does a voice for the character that changes after the first episode due to listener emails, but it's great. He has an overall quest to invent tacos, which is a running joke whenever they encounter something that could lead to said invention.

My "no longer regular" podcasts are:

How Did This Get Made is a hilarious podcast about shitty movies. The hosts are Rafi and Andre from The League, Andre's real life wife, and usually a guest celeb. One of the best ones out there. I only consider this "no longer regular" because I save episodes until I get a chance to watch the movie they're going to discuss. Sometimes the movie is one I know like the back of my hand, Con Air, other times it's one I've never seen.

I unsubscribed from The Herd after football season, but will pick it back up in the summer when football talk starts up.

I might do the same with The Bill Simmons podcast. His is mostly sports, but he does talk to a lot of celebs. During football season he has a few weekly ones, mainly gambling/pick based with Cousin Sal I listen to, but with football gone he'll talk lots of NBA and MLB and I don't really care about those sports.

The Cine-Files is about the most in depth look at classic movies that you'll find. They only do good movies, and do so about once a week. It's ok. It's not one I listen to often, but when I have I've been impressed with facts and angles on the movie I didn't know.

Brain Stuff are really quick podcasts breaking down how something works, some new advance in science, etc. They come out quite often and you could listen to 10-30 of them in an hour. This is part of a group of podcasts, but you'd have to do research to see the others. They're all educational and have different angles (women's view, an far more in depth breakdown of something, etc.)

Marvel has a Wolverine story podcast coming soon. Can't recommend or not recommend it yet, but I'm interested.

Anyone have any to recommend?

I think Troy mentioned "Critical Role", which is another D&D podcast.

Halloween Unmasked is my latest recommendation.

An 8 part in depth analysis of the original Halloween featuring interviews with everyone involved that's still alive.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. So well written...

I've seen the film about a thousand times and have read everything I could on it, yet still learned new things here.

They even bring in shrinks to discuss what the film does that affects people.

Myths and Legends is pretty entertaining. Guy tells the stories in a humorous way and usually tells them as they were originally told or written and will tell some of the variances that cropped up over the years. Some common fare fairy tales were pretty damned weird to start with.
