The Assistant (2019)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

The Assistant (2019)

Post by Leisher »

Current critics score on RT: 90%
Current audience score on RT: 24%

Why the disparity? Well, that's easy to explain.

This is a movie about a single day in the life of an assistant to a "powerful executive". She's the only female out of three assistants. The business the executive is in? Show business.

Throughout the movie the woman, played very well by Julia Garner (who is apparently on Ozark), does things a normal assistant would do and you're there to watch her do it all. Meanwhile, the executive has a pattern of destructive behavior and we watch as she reacts to that, while also watching other people reacting to it. We then get to see how men control her life, oppress her, keep her submissive with nice words, gaslight her, and how other men and women empower this executive. (I just realized all the other men and women doing the empowering were white. Intentional casting?)

Are you getting why the critics love this movie yet? It's about "the business" and is timely.

Is it good? Well, Julia Garner really is awesome and carries the film. But is it good? I mean, there's zero plot. But is it good?! It's not awful. But...is...it...good? No, probably not. You know, unless you're a woman who blames men for everything, then this movie might speak to you.
