Brightburn (2019)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Brightburn (2019)

A superhero horror story.

Stop me if you've heard this before... A couple in Kansas who cannot have their own kids happen upon a crashed alien craft with an infant inside.

Yep, it's the Superman origin story, which everyone knows, only this time there's a twist. The twist is obvious by the marketing, but in case you're an idiot they tell you exactly where they got the idea early on in the movie (wasps). In fact, there's very little subtlety in the writing throughout the movie. Everything is telegraphed

Young Brandon Breyer, played creepily by Jackson Dunn, is the found alien son of Elizabeth Banks and Pam's ex from The Office. Once he reaches a certain age weird things begin to happen as his people reach out to him. Slowly this boy begins to realize his abilities and acts exactly as you would think a boy hitting puberty would act. Basically, he's a complete dick and really fucking stupid.

The effects are well done and can be gross. The direction is very good with lots of Michael Meyers-esque actions from the baddie. The acting is fine, but probably the weakest aspect of the film. Banks' performance is probably the film's most important, but she's a bit too inconsistent. She's good, but not great. I'm not sure if it was her, the direction, or the dialogue she was given.

Overall though, this was a good movie. Very enjoyable despite the straightforwardness of the story. Not a masterpiece as a superhero film, but a pretty good horror film.

Stick around for the credits scene.
