Triple Frontier (2019)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Triple Frontier (2019)

Netflix

A group of former U.S. military specialists are having trouble making ends meet. One of them discovers the location of a drug lord and his millions of dollars. He then recruits the rest to change their lives for the better.

Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam (Jaeger pilot), and Pedro Pascal (The Viper) lead this ensemble film.

The acting is simply great, especially...wait for it...Affleck. No really! He's really good here and he's not going to be what you expect.

After watching heavily armed trained mercenaries get beat by housewives with kitchen shears in The First Purge, it was nice to see a film actually respect trained military operatives. This film does exactly that too. In fact, the main obstacle the guys face here really isn't enemy combatants. I'll leave it at that.

That all being said, it's not an amazing film. It's a bit long being filled with unnecessary scenes and a LOT of stuff has to go wrong for certain events to take place. The main plot point that the whole film revolves around is a bit weak as well. These are guys who are fucking trained, experienced, and stick to plans. These aren't amateurs who crack under pressure. You might think I'm giving things away, but I'm really not.

It was a good movie, but slow at times and definitely loses its charm and magic by the film's halfway point.

It was a decent movie. Slow, plodding, pretty predictable.

Just realized another huge flaw...a trained military unit wouldn't have no idea what their extraction vehicle is going to be, and certainly would understand weight limits considering they were leaving with a certain amount of stuff.

I'm also pretty sure the fire scene towards the end never would have happened.

Well, the irrationality of one of the characters was established earlier, and at least the film was consistent in his treatment, which is what caused this to occur. And, they did know their limit. The original plan had them with $X, but they decided to take $2X, again, owing that that same character's irrationality. The rest of the troops fell in line because Mr Irrational was their former captain, as I understood it.

So it's contrived, and dumb, but it's consistent.

We're getting very spoilery, so move on if you don't want shit spoiled.

I did not see his irrationality at all. He was extremely logical and almost emotionless. Look at how he discussed his divorce. He was the one who was adamant that everything had to be "just so" throughout the early stages of the film. Now clearly the story revolves around him unraveling, but guys like that don't need $2X. $X would set them for life because they don't live massive lives of luxury, nor would they be able to considering what we're told about "the other money". So why are they trying to take it all? Just grabbing another $25 or $50M would be plenty and would have led to a drastically different ending.

The fact that he kept unraveling later was meant to show us how desperate he was, but that was never established. Is he really in that much financial difficulty? Show us that!

Also, the time frame doesn't make sense in the film. He added a 15 minute window? How fucking so? Everyone knew the travel time to and from the church (I believe it was 10 minutes each way?) and the service was 40 minutes. Where the hell is he adding 15 minutes without everyone knowing or understanding? Why did those guards return early? Isn't the whole plan based upon the drug lord wanting his family safe above all else? Why would they leave only to return early leaving the family unprotected?

Here's another thing, the informant gave them the info about where, who, how much money, and the schedule. Then when the job is done she reveals she knew about all the other money and who it belonged to puts them in danger. WTF?

I know it's possible to nitpick any movie, but these are pretty big flaws in the story because they're critical details to this kind of heist pulled off by these kinds of people. These people don't go in with half-assed information.

You have a fair point here. His actions clearly show that he was making poor decisions, and he made them consistently, but you're right - We never know WHY (again, why I called it dumb). I mean, he was drinking at 8am in the morning, but that could be from many things.

My assumption was that since they left the main bad guy alive in his safe room, he was able to call his guards back. Although, this doesn't explain why his guards were SO FUCKING TERRIBLE about coming back. They were not ready for a fight at all.

Not quite sure what you're going for here. As I understood it, she knew there was $X, but when they said there was $2X, she came to the conclusion that it must be other people's, and they'd be in danger from his associates, which seems reasonable for her to know

Honestly, the beach scene was one of the weirdest to me. Like the people driving after them without guns. Then the people with guns, but not using them well, and such.

She never told them about the other money. Had she, they would have been prepared. Making an assumption is fine, but again, they didn't know about potentially pissing off other people with their actions? It was just odd. Either it was missed details or really bad story telling to bring the audience up to speed.

It's still an entertaining film, just very flawed.

I thought she didn't necessarily know about it, and just concluded that it must be other people's, since she only knew about his money from her role.
