This does not give me confidence about the movie. Pretentious people who probably know nothing about the character clapping for what, imho, looks like an art house piece...

Knowing only it was the critical darling at the festivals, I assumed it was full of SJW messaging. Anyone know?

The director himself has been pretty critical of the SJWs, the woke/cancel culture and political correctness in general. I think all those comments came after the festival screenings.

The guy who directed Joker made: Road Trip, Old School, the Hangover movies, and Borat.
I have a feeling that he's not the SJW type, but I don't know his beliefs.
It's slow at the beginning, but it's because they're doing an excellent job of creating the world Arthur lives in and making you question his intelligence and sanity. This is 100% a character piece. Typically, I hate origin stories of villains, but I have to admit, this was legit good.
That's all I'm going to say for now. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. There's one thing I have to say, but I'll wait until those who are going to see it do...
