You're confusing things. Here's what I know to be correct:
-Mar Vell was a man, and the original Captain Marvel. He died of cancer.
-Carol Danvers was originally Ms. Marvel and her powers were strength, flight, and invulnerability.
-Rogue, of the X-Men, had the ability to touch someone and steal their powers, as well as, their memories. She did this to Carol Danvers in the 70s or 80s and touched her so long she stole the powers permanently.
-At some point, Carol Danvers got Mar Vell's powers and became the new Captain Marvel.
-There is also a new Ms. Marvel that is a Muslim teenage girl who adored Danvers, but whose powers are stretching or something like that. (Never read it.)

Oftentimes in a movie where there's an emotional male that can't keep his cool, he's the villain.
"The overly emotional woman" is a cliche for a reason, and there's very much a reason why it was in this movie .
There's really very few situations in which "calm the fuck down" isn't good advice.
