TV - (And book!) - The Magicians

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

TV - (And book!) - The Magicians

Post by GORDON »

I grabbed this book when the word of mouth I heard on it, "Like Harry Potter but Harry would have been dead in the first 10 minutes."

I am not sure this book is "Young Adult." It takes place with a miserable high school kid who gets caught up in a Magic Prep School, but there's all kinds of kinky sex and violence, so I dunno.

The Harry Potter stories exist in their universe, and they ironically use Rowlingisms like, "We'll get together later... send me an owl." But, the crux of the story is Not-Narnia, and how utterly miserable all of them are.

I dunno. Interesting read if you are in the mood for some magics. I'll read the sequel and see what up.

Read the sequel. It is better, IMO, because the main guy is older and less of a moping shit.

Third book came out recently, and holds up. The three together are a pretty good arc, and a completed story. i don't know if there are any plans to continue it, but they don't need to. Loose ends tied.

I'll reread these again in a few years back to back, and will probably enjoy them more without the year waits in between.

Making a miniseries of it. And since it is the SyFy channel you KNOW it's going to be really good.

Quentin, who's supposed to be 18/19, looks 28.

Could be interesting. It certainly had a couple of good lines. If the show leans more towards dry humor instead of straight emo drama, I'll try it.

Yeah, I'm REALLY hoping they don't carry the "moping shits" of characters into the show, but considering their target audience are probably all moping shits, they probably will.

Had the first episode since forever ago, finally watched it.

It is serviceable. For some reason they are making the "protagonist" some sort of "The One" instead of an unusually talented random guy who stumbles in on some weird shit, but so far I wont let it bug me. They made the character less annoying than he was in the first book, so that's good.

Book - Grossman - The Magicians

It's on Netflix now, and they changed that pilot episode, I guess, to address my complaints. It is closer to the books, now. "The One" aspect is gone, and now the magic School is grad school, not teenage prep school. Tonally, that works much better.

I.am seven into a thirteen episode season one, and they nailed it. Enjoying it. Worth your time.

Season 1 ended strong, I enjoyed it a great deal, and there's still some of Book 1 left. Season 2 is out there, but not on Netflix yet, but I'll be starting it soon.

Some of the episodes are pretty intense, and I wondered if they'd be true to the books. They were, more or less. Those episodes ended with PSAs for a suicide prevention hotline, and another to a rape support hotline.

I am embarrassed to say that I watched all of Season 2 over the weekend, the first time I binged watched something since I can't remember when. First time in memory that I had a Saturday with no other obligations.

Good show. Very close to the books.

Season three just had an episode reminiscent of Star Trek TNG - The Inner Light.

This show keeps getting better, you should watch it.

I will add it to my watch list.

Another great episode last night. It was called "Six Short Stories," about what 6 people did, individually, to move the plot along, this.week.

There is a minor side character, she's deaf. Her segment was filmed with complete silence.

I bet this show get nominated for an Emmy, this year.

Here's them having a secret conversation using only pop culture references.

Minorly spoilery, I guess, if you want to wait and see it as part of the story.

Season 3 just ended. Show is still strong.

Season 4 in 2019, according to that last thing they showed at the end of the episode. Typically the previous season ends up on Netflix the week before the new season starts.

I've heard it said that people brought into the series brand new have a problem with season 1, saying it's slow. I didn't encounter that, as one who'd read the books. But everyone tells the noobs to stick with it, the slowness speeds up and pays off.
