Yah, sucks really. The 'devestation' was completely in the wrong place.
Devestation is a sensational word that is overplayed in the media for ratings. The debate has been going on at my job that some people got what they deserved for being too stubborn to leave. One guy even became livid at the idea of forced evacuations. Quote , " If they want to stay in toxic conditions, who is the government to stop them.

I agree with him.

The problem isn't these people choosing to stay behind, it's the damn policy of the rescuers of going back to ask them over and over again and thus waste valuable resources. They see these people as a problem they have to keep checking on, when they should be completely off of their radar once they've elected to stay. The policy should be "We are here to rescue you. If you choose not to go, that's fine, but we will NOT be back."

What we really need before a big hurricane is a bunch of TV spots showing the bloated corpses of Katrina victims with the tag line "Choose to stay, choose to die." More people would leave, and those that stay would have no excuse about not knowing what they were getting into.

Yeah, if they want to stay - go ahead.

Just don't ask for money for your health problems, deformed children, etc.

That's my biggest problem with this...they will feel entitled to free total health coverage from any problems they develop from this. Bastards.

I think they need to form a class action lawsuit: The Residents of New Orleans and Surrouding Parrishes v. Hurricane Katrina. Sue the storm for damages, wrongful death, and pain & suffering.

Don't fool yourselves, there WILL be lawsuits.

Apparently, there's another hurricane due to whap New Orleans. Twin Cities political conventions would be called off in such an event. Cos, you know, you can't politic while people who live less than thirty miles from the coast, below sea level, between two flood-prone rivers, in a fucking swamp, who don't take care of their levees are getting gently reminded by mother nature that not EVERYWHERE is habitable. So, what'll they do instead? All the delegates & shit are already here, hotel rooms booked. It's not like they're going anywhere. They sure as fuck ain't flying to Louisiana.

On the plus side, the bars are opened 2 hours past normal closing time.

I think the idea is that they don't want to have party-we're having fun-convention highlights while the news sandwiches it in between big ol' hurricane devastation updates.

"Republicans hate black people and poor people, see, they can't even stop partying long enough to personally evacuate people." It's too easy.
