pizza

Post by Malcolm »

An ongoing thread. Let's take a trip down memory lane to the drones. Heading to Chi-town in July. Will be trying to check out this place.

Lou's is fine, but Giordano's is as good as it gets in Chicago.

This is my favorite pizza on Earth.

Here's the Yelp page because it has pics.

This is where I did that poor attempt at college w/all the sex so I have good associations with that pizza.

We've got a MOD pizza now. It's not awful. But it's the best around here, which is sad.

Mangled On Delivery.

It's a pizza where they omit the little plastic table from the box and it gets crushed.

TPR: a Texan acquaintance recommended Hungry Howie's to me. There's one in Columbus but I haven't tried it. You?

I'm sure that slogan's on a homemade poster hanging in one campus branch somewhere.

Haven't heard of Howie's before. The closest one is on the other side of town about 50 miles from here. But if you get around to trying it and it's good I'll give it a try.

The interesting thing about MOD pizza is that they don't charge for toppings. It's sort of like ordering a sandwich at subway, you point at all the different toppings you want to stick on it and they pile it on and put it into that huge brick oven. Since they only do small/medium on thin crust they cook up fast. Not great pizza, but a good place to get creative with the topping combinations.

I thought you said they make pizza, not gussied up, oversized crackers.

That person is not your friend. Hungry Howie's is a lower tier pizza joint. I'd probably rank it above Little Caesar's, but lower than Marco's, Pizza Hut, Vito's, and Papa John's.

Lower than Marcos? Jesus. I thought only Gumby's could be listed as lower than Marcos.

That must be some really shitty pizza.

In Chi Town at Pizzeria Uno, alleged birthplace of deep dish. Orders take an hour to make properly. Good sign.

Hand to Jeebus, someone walked in and asked, "Do you have thin crust?" Fucking wow.

Gah. At least try Lou Malnati's or Giordano's. Skip the Uno's.

Lou was on my list, but got bumped due to my buddy's recommedation. He's got the inverse of your opinion. I'll be back here eventually, and more than one deep dish per visit is overkill. Takes a week to digest it.

I have been to Unos a few places around the country, always terrible. I avoid them now.

I've never actually had Lou's. It's on my list. My aunt, who lived in Chicago for a long time, swears by it.

Uno's is good, but it's meh compared to Giordano's.

Uno's went to shit in the mid-90's when they expanded the menu and stopped being the restaurant they are in Chicago, etc.

The original restaurants in Chicgao (Pizzeria Uno and Pizzeria Due), however, did not undergo the changes, and are still good.

I DVR'd some food or travel channel show that showcased "the pie places." Lou's was the first joint they hit. Definitely checking it next. Usually get to town 1-2 per year. Not worried.
