Good call. Thanks to social media, the press has a LOT of competition on the misinformation front.

I mean, seriously.... if the situation is as dire as they say.... this is a clear, immediate emergency, and the world should absolutely be invading the amazon with very loose rules of engagement.

Science: This is the highest number of fires we've had seen record-keeping began (2013).

Brazil's president: This is no worse than normal.

Vince: This in on par.
The number of fires in Brazil this year is the highest on record since 2013 and is up by 85% from last year alone, CNN reported. So far this year, more than 80,000 fires in the country have been detected by Brazil's space research center, INPE.

Then again, if that's what "science" is saying, I automatically assume the adjusted the number of past fires, down.

As for "on par," etc, is that good enough? If the # people murdered each year stays the same, is that good? It's the dry seasons, so fires will happen, but how many are set intentionally? Should they be?

NASA:
As of August 16, 2019, an analysis of NASA satellite data indicated that total fire activity across the Amazon basin this year has been close to the average in comparison to the past 15 years.
The number of fires doesn't matter. How much forest is burning matters. Gordo is right. They are choosing a metric that provides them with the most funding.

Farmers use fire all the time to clear their fields after crops are gathered. Adds some stuff back to the earth. Been happening for a few hundred years now. Not seeing any info on how much smoke is from forests and how much is from farms.

Fires happen in nature all the time. It renews the forests with new varieties of fauna that can't compete for sunlight with the high canopy. Soil is revitalized.

I mean, it could be...way too many variables there.

This is true.

This is also probably true. However, it's still not nothing. When you lose as much rainforest annually as we have been these fires become more and more of a big deal.

I don't disagree that this could be true. If the press would do a better job of realistically presenting stories, that might start doing more good than harm. Like I've said earlier, too many organizations have lied too often for too long for me to not immediately assume they're lying unless I see evidence otherwise. I just saw an article while searching for info that staed that we are losing 120 some odd species per day from the Amazon rain forests. That's not even realistic.

The outright lying or simple hyperbole has to end. It's been people crying "wolf" for decades and now when shit is really happening they don't understand why people aren't responding.

Yes. In my guestimation, one of the biggest problems is that probably the first two or three org names you think of when someone says "environmentalists" have been grifting on this for well over 30 years. It's like having reports on racist incidents and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton immediately find a camera that's broadcasting. Everyone just turns it off at that point. And the press makes it worse (as Gordo indicates) because putting the charlatans on are good for the ratings (for the half that aren't turned off).

And the biggest, funny thing is that if these groups actually accomplished their goals, they'd be out of business. How many of them actually put themselves out of business? Uh huh.

Happens with almost all of them. NAACP, NOW, even National Right to Life. Though it's a little different with National Right to Life. They are simply an organ of the National Republican Party. They know if Roe is overturned, they will lose a huge wedge issue for them.

This link doesn't show anything, but is still definitely NSFW.

Pornhub comes up with a way for you to watch porn and save the ocean.

Emma Thompson (who gets a platform because she's a celebrity, not an expert) says we have weaponized the Earth.

So again, if this is all so dire, why isn't anyone acting like it? (And again, I'm on their side!)

Pretty sure Emma is also an anti-gun person, although I might just be assuming that. Still, it has to be pointed out that the folks bitching that nobody is doing anything about the environment are typically the same people who want guns banned because "we don't need protection from the government anymore".

I guess sitting back while the world dies isn't something we need protection from, so why'd she write this piece?

Seeing some of the highlights from the CNN town hall on the environment. I'm suspecting they are afraid of losing Trump and the daily material for their network and are producing as much GOP ad material as possible.

EDIT: After seeing how CNN has completely spiked the story from their own town hall of Biden's eye bleed while on camera, I'm left to assume that CNN thinks normal people won't be completely turned off by the bat shit crazy that was coming from that stage last night.
