Wife and I did the tests about a month ago.

So far, nothing radical.

My wife is matrilineally Native American. I'm European. Patrilineally, I'm a Viking!

I have good genes for fast twitch muscles (Duh, all my best sporting events were sprinting/short).

I have decent genes for VO2Max response.

Moderate responder to excerise. I'm a "moderate" power athlete. Oh, and I'm fairly sensitive to tendon injuries. Considering I have two f'ed up Achilles tendons... yeah, I know this.

I'm a fast metabolizer for caffeine.

I should eat fewer carbs than normal people, and should avoid saturated fats, but eat lots of the healthier fats.

Lots of tools to analyze your data

I went to Athletigen. Here are my #s translated to %s in population distribution

Motivation - 40th percentile
Power - 78th percentile
Anaerobic - 69th percentile
Endurance - 78th percentile
Metabolism - 51st percentile
Recovery - 82nd percentile
Injury protection - 83rd percentile.

So, overall, I'm better than average. But not very motivated.

Our eldest has very curly hair. My wife and I attribute it to eatch other. My theory is whatever ugly genes we each had must have gone too her. We each have 2 of 6, uh, letters, for curly hair. And could have given her up to 4 of the 6.

Your DNA is now in a free database for cops.

http://fusion.net/story....ers-dna

Now, five years later, when 23andMe and Ancestry Both have over a million customers, those warnings are looking prescient. “Your relative’s DNA could turn you into a suspect,” warns Wired, writing about a case from earlier this year, in which New Orleans filmmaker Michael Usry became a suspect in an unsolved murder case after cops did a familial genetic search using semen collected in 1996. The cops searched an Ancestry.com database and got a familial match to a saliva sample Usry’s father had given years earlier.

The database they searched was a public one, not a private Ancestry.com or 23andme one.

Well, looks like it went from $99 to $199 already. Guess I bought at the right time.

Talked to my mom today.

Some woman reached out to her, myself, and my uncle (mom's brother) a few weeks ago. I ignored it.

Turns out her dad is a half brother of my mom + uncle (SURPRISE!) and that guy is 1 year older than my mom. So my grand dad had an illegitimate son that no one knew about. It was right before the war (1940/41, unsure of exact timeline), so he might have shipped out before he knew.

I suspect this happens a lot. My niece and nephew tested as first cousin. Sister tested as (I think I recall) aunt/uncle/half sibling. My older sister and I speculated before that she could be a half sibling.

Not impossible for her to test that way and actually be a full sibling, but she's never mentioned the test results (or having even taken it). So we (older sister and myself) aren't saying anything. We grew up as siblings. She's my sister.

Won't say I'm not curious, though.

Right? Everyone involved from a parental stand point (my grandfather, his wife, the mom of the half-brother) are all passed away, so we'll never really know what happened.

My wife's family had a similar thing come up with her grandfather 20 years ago. But there were no DNA tests then so everyone just called the person a liar and moved on.

Kinda weird to realize my granddad cheated on my grandma. But maybe there were reasons.
I suspect this happens a lot.
I read reddit, and there's always stories of this type of thing there. And every time my reaction was "My family's so boring when it comes to this stuff."

Well, who knew.

I figure I'll wait until my parents have passed before I broach the subject (if I do). It would devastate my dad if true.

We knew my dad had been unfaithful. That was part of the reason for the divorce. I don't think anyone would be too shocked to find a half sibling on his side that no one knew about. My mom doesn't track as someone like that. I have a friend from elementary school days that I've reconnected with since moving back to the area. This subject came up concerning his wife's family and I was telling him about our suspicions. He told me if we find out he's not sure he wants to know because it would crush his image of her.

Even thousands of years ago, the Romans knew a simple truth:. The mother of the child is always certain. The father is never certain.

Women worldwide walk around wary of surprise genetic testing.
