Someone finally looked at his tie a bit more closely.
A powerful electron microscope located more than 100,000 particles on old the JCPenny tie. The team has identified particles like Cerium, Strontium Sulfide, and pure titanium.

He wore a clip-on JC Penny tie to the hijacking. He took it off before leaping out. It appears he also wore it to work.

They transposed a couple words. That's grade-A proofreading nowadays as far as journalism goes.

Heh... am I the only one not excited that the tie of the guy that jumped out of an airplane had on it material and compounds that are used to make airplanes?

I read that it was used in a specific plane, but did they say it was exclusive to that plane? Mostly saying that tongue in cheek, but I would like to see really how rare that was. Would like to see clothing of other passengers tested.

The chems mentioned are not things you'd find used on typical passenger airliners of the time. They would have been for special ones, probably government contracts with experimental materials.

They said they were used in certain display screens and that at the time those were only being used in one prototype project for the government. So very unique.

Although if it's because of the screens there's also the likelihood that those same sorts of screens were just starting to be used in some other industries. I think it's the reporters that latched onto the Boeing project because they liked that story best.
