40 aint no joke - General fitness thread
Re: 40 aint no joke - General fitness thread
I keep getting woken up by charley horses that make my calves ache all day even if I stretch them out as soon as I feel them. Three times a fucking week at least.
It's not from running either, it's from the damn wide bed I'm sleeping on. I miss my tiny futon.

Eat a banana.

Typically muscle cramps are a product of overuse, secondarily a product of electrolyte imbalance (potassium, sodium, other)

Re: 40 aint no joke - General fitness thread
He didn't mention being sore from exercise, and most Americans get enough salt in their regular diets. Bananas have potassium.

Also calcium, so eat some chalk.

Thirdly they're a product of a wide bed that let my legs kick around all crazy-legs-style while I'm on my side, instead of my nice, narrow futon. I will try some bananas, but I don't expect them to do anything.TheCatt wrote:Typically muscle cramps are a product of overuse, secondarily a product of electrolyte imbalance (potassium, sodium, other)
No. I hate milk.TPRJones wrote:Also calcium, so eat some chalk.

So tie yourself up every night or deal with what I assume is some variation of this. You shouldn't be moving around during the night if you're sleeping properly. Waking up with cramps and soreness means your muscles are doing far too much work when they ought to be resting.

Sometimes when I sleep I wake up and my hands are numb.
I mentally chastise myself for being weak and hit the gym harder the next day.

I don't wake up with cramps and soreness. I'm woken up by stabbing pain in my calf from my leg moving around awkwardly and pinching nerves, which eases 99% as soon as I stretch out on tiptoe like a ballerina to release them.Malcolm wrote:So tie yourself up every night or deal with what I assume is some variation of this. The 1% remaining pain persists as a dull, irritating, 'pinched nerve' ache that doesn't stop me from doing anything except having a completely nice day.
Some people just shift around while they sleep; it's not a disorder. In my futon I tend to rotate like a slow turbine throughout the night, but don't get pain because my legs stay straight. If I had RLS/PLMS, they'd move even in a narrow bed.

That occasionally happens to me, but only when I'm half-awake. Still seems strange.I'm woken up by stabbing pain in my calf from my leg moving around awkwardly and pinching nerves, which eases 99% as soon as I stretch out on tiptoe like a ballerina to release them.

I don't make the distinction between half-awake and asleep because I don't remember or have conscious control during either.Malcolm wrote:That occasionally happens to me, but only when I'm half-awake. Survey:
1) How long is a typical cardio session for you?
2) How many calories are you burning through according to whatever gizmo you use to keep track?

1) 1-3 hours
2) 650-900 calories/hour, depending on what is reporting, and what I'm doing (running > biking > swimming). I'm guessing 700/hour is about accurate for my biking.
3) ~5 (excluding short stuff like biking to work)

Hmm, I suppose I should ask 3) how many sessions per week, as well.

Re: 40 aint no joke - General fitness thread
U got the FitBit Charge 2 when it came out. Been living with it for a couple of weeks. Basically, it's a nicer Charge HR with a larger screen (same width, more vertical space), and it connects to the phone to use it's GPS for running/biking activities, which makes the distance much more accurate. A nice iterative improvement over the prior Charge HR. Hopefully it lasts longer.

Went on a trip this weekend, ate crap, gained a few pounds.
Added back pull-ups, chin-ups, and push-ups last night. Went easy due to my arm tendon issues. See the orthopedist on Friday.

God-mother-Jesus H. Bastard son-of-a-bitch Christ-fucking-damn, I hate being sick. I had a nice activity curve going the past couple months --
slow, smooth, steady cardio progress
going down pant sizes, belt notches, etc.
no appetite spikes
even the crappy lower, fuck it, back muscles are showing some improvement
I-fucking-deal. As of tomorrow, I'll have been out of the gym for a week and I find it intolerable. It's not the coughing I hate, it's the coughing up. Seems to be subsiding.

That soylent is killing you.
Back on topic, I can't believe how good I've felt lately. Nothing hurts and I am making strength gains. If only my gray hair would turn back to brown, I'd be all set.

According to my workout numbers before getting wasted and hanging around my sick friends, the increased soylent intake was boosting my energy noticeably.
