General Cell Phone Discussion

Post by TheCatt »

I'm sick of Verizon's high prices & lack of Nexus 5.

Anyone use anything else? AT&T looks to be just as expensive, which kinda leaves Sprint or TMobile.

Word is TMobile has finally been expanding their network and buying more frequency (especially with the free money from the AT&T divorce), but online ratings still seem pretty low on them.

ting.com

It's owned by Tucows. There's no contracts, they just charge you for the level you use each month and that's it. The prices are good and they don't try to screw you. Plus their customer service is superb and doesn't leave you on hold, and if they have to put you on hold for some reason the music is Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension.

I can't stress how much I love their service so far.

If you like what you see use this link and you & I both get a credit: https://zorp091p303.ting.com/

What device do you use on Ting? As I understand it, there's some issues about devices being behind the times, and not having LTE on most of the MVNOs?

Nexus 5 coming to Ting relatively soon.

Maybe that'll be my jumping off point. Once it arrives.

I have a Galaxy II. I don't know the details about what does and doesn't work with Ting, but I think the general rule of thumb is if it would work on Sprint it will likely work on Ting?

The fact that you know what MVNO means implies you already know more about that than I do. :p

I hope you like it! I've found it very refreshing, not having my cell provider trying to screw me.

Impediment #1: Have to find a microSIM that's compatible. Ting doesnt have many. Local Spring store sold out.

Sweet, phones arrived today. And, they are now allowing SIM purchases, so that'll be here within a couple of week so I can get up and running.

$50? I think it's only $25, right? It may look like 2 orders because I had to order my SIM and my wife's SIM separately (couldn't order a quantity of 2). At any rate... we'll find out this week.

Apparently it's $50 for the first referral, and then $25 for each subsequent referral after that one.

Shouldn't you be my first referral, and then your wife is yours?

My wife and I will be on the same account, so I don't think that counts. It's just $6/phone to add extra lines. (Great plan for kids/low users, etc)

I'll be getting my daughter her first phone pretty soon (probably for her birthday this May), so I was looking at a similar thread on Reddit:
http://www.reddit.com/r....oviders

I'm grandfathered into an old $89 (after taxes) unlimited nationwide calling, unlimited text, and unlimited (local) data plan and any change would lock me into a contract where I pay more for less.

The problem is that I live in the middle of nowhere.
My provider (Bluegrass Cellular) has great service in my area, but lousy coverage just about everywhere else.
I use roaming data in Louisville, Frankfort, and Lexington, and of course I'm roaming every time I visit family out-of-state.

I need to find people who use other providers and invite them over to my house so I can see what their coverage is like. :)

I am activated. The process didn't quite follow either of their guides, but I figured it out. I've already got $35 in credits as well.

So did you spend the $20 to port your current cell # to Google Voice, then have it forward to your new number?
Or did you port the number directly?
Or not at all?

I ported directly myself. My use of Google Voice is somewhat limited. Mostly I give the number to people I don't want to actually talk to or have my real number, and then set it to go straight to voicemail. Like my mother.
