Hmmm.
I'd need to see some amazing speed and reliability numbers before I'd transition the house to something wireless.

Yeah, it's probably a good solution for the 70%, but I'll cling to my wires as long as I can.
It's not me, it's someone else.

Which is a bummer, because if Google can't make fiber-to-home work, there isn't anyone else who can either..... unless congress (or the states?) can forget they have been paid off, and ease restrictions on municipal broadband.
Google kind of owes the USA this, as far as I'm concerned. The USA has made them rich. They should give infrastructure back, even if the profit margins are slim and/or nonexistent. The faster the country's internet, the faster they can serve ads.

I'd guess for 90% of Internet users, this would be fine. For the BitTorrent crowd, probably not.

I would think the BT crowd would be ok... I think it is the gamers and people who live stream video on Netflix that will notice when it is less-than-perfect.

Right. If Netflix is a huge portion of that bandwidth, and they say it is, then most users will NOT be fine.
Considering all the cable cutting going on, people don't realize how far up shit creek this is going to put them.

People are already streaming video via cellular connections. With competition in the cellular arena that doesn't exist in others, this will only improve. Gamers need fast response times, but not necessarily high throughput.

I saw that Verizon's "Unlimited data" actually means their fast speed up to... X amount of gigs.... then you are throttled to dial-up speeds, but still unlimited.
I think if peeps try to stream 4k Netflix to their big-screen TV while little suzie video skypes and little timmy plays a ton of world of warcraft while dad streams porn constantly, they are going to see performance issues AND hit their monthly "unlimited" limit pretty fast, which will leave them essentially SOL until their month rolls over.
My point being, I don't think cellular data is as good as they want everyone to think.

True. That's how my satellite Internet is as well. But the unlimited Verizon plan is much better than what cellular plans were three years ago. Also, the competition has forced AT&T to model a plan after Verizon's (I noticed they had a similar data plan now). Competition will make more and better options.GORDON wrote: I saw that Verizon's "Unlimited data" actually means their fast speed up to... And Google would have made the best competitive option. Really all I was trying to say.

True. I do wonder if the "ISP's shouldn't be allowed to sell user data" argument might have played into their pulling the plug. If they figured that into their business plan, the idea of losing that might have become a consideration.
